Toronto Blue Jays at Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies and Blue Jays (21-22) have not reached the World Series since they met in 1993 as Toronto won in six games. The Phillies won two of three home games against Toronto last year to take an 11-10 lead in the all-time interleague series.
Philadelphia sends Jamie Moyer (2-3, 5.02 ERA) to the mound to start this series. He's coming off his worst outing of the season after he allowed a season-high six earned runs and nine hits in four innings of an 8-2 loss to San Francisco on Saturday.
Moyer is 17-10 with a 3.01 ERA in 33 interleague starts. The 17 wins are tied for fifth-most in interleague history.
The 45-year-old left-hander is 8-3 despite a 5.69 ERA over his last 18 starts against Toronto.
The Blue Jays also counter with a left-hander in David Purcey (0-0, 2.08), who is being called up from Triple-A to make the spot start because of a rainout against Cleveland on Sunday. The rookie pitched 4 1-3 innings in his first major league appearance on April 18 against Detroit, allowing one run and two hits in the 8-4 loss.
Toronto has won four straight, including a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins. The Blue Jays concluded that series with an 11-inning, 3-2 win on Thursday after pinch-hitter Joe Inglett drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th with a two-out, bases-loaded single.
The winning streak comes after the Blue Jays lost their previous four in a row, including the first three games of this 10-game road trip.
Toronto third baseman Scott Rolen, a nemesis of Phillies fans from his days with the club from 1996-2002, is a career .342 hitter in nine games at Citizens Bank Park.
The Blue Jays were 10-8 in interleague play last season
