Kansas City Royals at Florida Marlins

Photo_mlb TIME: 07:10 P.M. EST VENUE: Dolphin Stadium The first-place Florida Marlins have been perhaps the biggest surprise in baseball in the early going. Their outstanding play in interleague games shouldn't be surprising anymore. Florida (23-17) looks to pad its impressive record against the AL on Friday when it opens a three-game home series against the Kansas City Royals. The Marlins went 71-91 to finish in the NL East cellar last season after finishing fourth the year before. Florida has undergone a resurgence this season, however, and holds a one-game lead in the division over Philadelphia. While the Marlins are coming off two straight losing seasons, they've always performed well in interleague play, going 105-81 against the AL - third-best in baseball. "I personally do like (interleague play) because you see teams you usually don't season," owner Jeffrey Loria told the Marlins' official Web site. "There are 30 teams in baseball. It's nice to see more than half of them." Florida will look to rely on its edge against AL teams as it tries to end a season high-tying three-game losing streak. The Marlins came into a four-game series against Cincinnati having won seven in a row, but dropped the first three contests before Thursday's game was postponed because of bad weather. The rainout means Andrew Miller (3-2, 6.52 ERA), who was scheduled to start Thursday, will take the ball Friday. Miller, acquired in the offseason trade that sent slugger Miguel Cabrera to Detroit, struggled to start the year, but is 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA in his last four starts. The left-hander struck out a season-high seven in seven innings - his longest outing of the season - in an 11-0 win at Washington on Saturday. Miller is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in four interleague starts, all against NL teams. However, he's 0-1 with an 18.69 ERA in one start and two relief appearances against the Royals. In the one start, he lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing five runs and five hits while walking two and hitting two batters in a 5-0 home loss Aug. 29. Kansas City (19-21) will counter with Brett Tomko (1-4, 5.67), who's lost his last four decisions. The right-hander gave up six runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-5 defeat to Baltimore on Saturday. Tomko is 10-6 with a 5.46 ERA in 33 interleague games - 21 starts - that have come almost exclusively against AL opponents. He's 7-2 with a 3.18 ERA in 14 games - 10 starts - versus the Marlins. Kansas City has won a season-high four straight, including a three-game sweep of the Tigers. The Royals concluded that series Thursday with an 8-4 win, as Jose Guillen homered and drove in three runs. Kansas City held Detroit to six runs in the series. "I think the confidence level has a lot to do with it," said Royals manager Trey Hillman, whose team also swept three games in Detroit to start the season. "I think it has a lot to do with the fact that we went into their place to open the season and nobody was expecting us to do much of anything ... I don't deny I think there is some confidence that rubs off that to this series." The Royals were 10-8 in interleague play last season. They are 3-3 all-time against the Marlins, with all six games coming in Kansas City. The Royals took two of three from Florida from June 15-17. Kansas City's David DeJesus is hitting .344 (76-for-221) in interleague play, and went 6-for-14 (.429) against the Marlins last season.
