MONEYLINE: Tampa Bay Rays -144
WIN for +1.39 unit(s)
Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa Bay Rays – Not only is Tampa Bay 36-14 at home this season but the Blue Jays are a sub-par 20-28 on the road. Yes, the Rays come into this game having lost seven straight but six of those losses came on the road. Also, when a team that was hot, like Tampa Bay, goes cold the best thing possible for them is an All Star Break. Look for the Rays to come out rejuvenated and get their second half off to a very strong start. Having James Shields on the mound tonight certainly improves their odds of getting off to a strong start. Shields simply loves pitching at Tropicana Field. He is 5-1 at home this season with a 2.13 ERA and opponents are hitting just .208 against him at The Trop. This is nothing new as Shields is 16-7 at home in his career with a 3.23 ERA and opponents are hitting just .239 against him at Tampa Bay! The Rays right-hander is also a perfect 3-0 in his career against the Jays. Shields has a 2.70 ERA versus Toronto and the Blue Jays have hit just .202 against him. The Tampa Bay hurler should definitely be the beneficiary of plenty of run support tonight! That’s because A.J. Burnett is on the hill for the Jays. Although Burnett is coming off of a very strong start against the Yankees that game was at home. Burnett is just 3-5 on the road this season. He also lost his only start against the Rays this season and that was in Toronto. Note that he does have some impressive career numbers against Tampa Bay but, of course, Burnett faced a lot of poor Rays teams through the years. There is nothing poor about this season’s version of the Rays and they should jump on the Jays hurler tonight. In his career, Burnett is 46-25 at home but note that he is 33-49 on the road. Look for road loss #50 on the way tonight! The Rays should win this one in Big Easy style!
