MONEYLINE: Tampa Bay Rays -120
WIN for +1.67 unit(s)
Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays
RAYS – The home team has won all ten games between these two teams so far this season. This included yesterday’s 5-4 win for the Rays and Tampa Bay is now 31-13 at home on the season. In contrast, the Red Sox are just 19-25 on the road this season. So, why the low price posted on the Rays for this game? A lot of that has to do with Tim Wakefield’s impressive history against Tampa Bay. The knuckle-baller is 17-3 with a 3.31 ERA in 29 starts against the Rays. Of course we are now getting line value as a result of this because, the fact is, many of the Rays team that Wakefield faced in the past were very weak clubs. This season’s team is anything but weak and the Red Sox have found that out first hand at Tropicana Field. For further evidence of the fact that many of Wakefield’s stats against Tampa Bay are based on the historical differences between these clubs through the years, note that in this season’s start versus the Rays the Red Sox Wakefield struggled with too many walks and was fortunate the damage was not worse. Last season, even though Wakefield went 4-1 against Tampa Bay, he had a 4.08 ERA and, as you can see, was not dominant. Tuesday night, Wakefield will be taking on a Rays club that is now 15-7 since getting swept at Fenway Park in early June! Look for the Rays lineup to get the job done against Wakefield tonight but also look for a strong start from Matt Garza to play a key role. The Rays right-hander is coming off of an extremely impressive effort in his most recent start as catcher Shawn Riggans indicated it was the best pitching performance that he’s ever caught. Garza threw a 1-hitter in the 6-1 win over the Marlins and this was on the road! Note that Garza has been at his best at home this season. He is 4-1 with a 2.51 ERA and he’s held opponents to a .219 batting average in his seven starts at Tropicana Field. Garza struggled at Boston four weeks ago but he now gets revenge at home and, for the 11th straight time this season, the home teams wins the Red Sox/Rays match-up tonight!
