Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres

PADRES – With last night’s 4-0 shutout loss the Braves have dropped to a hideous 13-32 on the road this season. Even though the Padres are only 23-28 at home, you can see that the odds are clearly in our favor here with value on the home team laying such short number. A key to this value is Greg Maddux on the mound against his former team. The Padres right-hander shows a surprising 1-2 record in his ten home starts! The reason we say this is surprising is because he simply has not received any run support. Maddux has a stellar 2.36 ERA at Petco Park with a fantastic 0.98 WHIP and teams are hitting just .218 against him at home! In his last nine home starts, Maddux has allowed more than two earned runs just once this season! That is simply amazing and it is indicative of the type of rock solid work that we expect to be on display once again at Petco Park tonight. The Braves just can’t get their offense on track away from home and they send a struggling hurler to the mound tonight. Charlie Morton gets the start for Atlanta and he was roughed up for six earned runs on eight hits in six innings in his most recent start. That was his fifth start this season and though the Braves managed to sneak out a win in that slugfest, they had lost three of his four prior starts. Morton has allowed three homers and 16 total hits in his last eight innings of work. Even though the Padres are certainly not known for their offensive prowess, pitchers like Morton tend to bring out the best in major league hitters. The 24 year old Braves right-hander simply has a lot to learn about pitching at the major league level and while Morton endures the ‘learning curve’ again tonight watch him get outdueled by Maddux, the crafty veteran. San Diego in a Blowout here!
