Angels – How good has Joe Saunders been this season? With a win today he would be the first 12 game winner in the American League and Saunders would also tie the Diamondbacks Brandon Webb for the major league lead! Saunders has pitched especially well against divisional competition as he’s 4-0 with a 2.22 ERA against the AL West. The Angels southpaw faced Oakland once so far this season. In that late April start, Saunders dominated the A’s as he held them to just four hits (all singles) in eight innings of work! Saunders is now 3-1 in six career starts against the A’s. Saunders is coming off of a loss against the Dodgers in his most recent outing but note that he hasn’t lost consecutive starts all season! Also, with yesterday’s win, the Angels now lead the Athletics by 4.5 games as Oakland’s offense continues to be an issue. The A’s have scored a total of just ten runs in their last four games and this has a lot to do with them losing three of those four games! Note that the Angels should certainly be happy with this early start time! Los Angeles is 14-6 in day games this season. That is the best record in the majors for daytime baseball. Also note that the Angels are 15-5 when facing a left-handed starter this season. This afternoon the Angels will be facing Dana Eveland of the A’s. The Oakland southpaw has produced some solid numbers on the season, including recently. However, Eveland was hammered for six runs on seven hits in 5.3 innings in his only career start against the Angels and that start was in Anaheim in late April. Note that Eveland has not been as strong on the road as he’s been at home as he is 2-3 with a 4.05 ERA away from Oakland. He’s in trouble today against an Angels offense that has been better at home, better versus lefties, and better in day games! All those factors considered, this should be a “Big Easy” win for the Angels!
