Los Angeles Dodgers at Houston Astros

Photo_mlb

Astros – With a first glance at this match-up, some will be tempted to take the Dodgers. After all, Eric Stults of Los Angeles is 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA while the Astros Roy Oswalt is just 6-8 with a 4.77 ERA this season. Of course this is where we get line value and we’re actually getting it on multiple fronts! First off, Stults is only 2 years younger than Oswalt and yet the Dodgers southpaw is making just his tenth career MLB start tonight. As for Oswalt, he’s made 226 starts in his career and he has a 118-62 record. Is Stults a late bloomer? Maybe so, but he’s still no Oswalt! Also, Oswalt’s numbers this season are not indicative of how well he is throwing the ball right now. Oswalt started the season in poor fashion but note what he has done lately! Oswalt has allowed three earned runs or less in six straight starts. The Astros right-hander has allowed 41 hits in his last 40.3 innings of work and he’s struck out 32. Yes, the “old” Oswalt appears to be coming back and Oswalt is also 4-3 with a 3.96 ERA in his career against the Dodgers as Los Angeles has hit just .255 against him. The Astros are 21-18 at home this season while the Dodgers are just 16-23 on the road. As for Stults, he is coming off of an impressive shutout of the White Sox in his most recent start but that came at home and Stults threw 116 pitches in that outing. Now he takes to the road and he is unlikely to be as strong after that long outing against the ChiSox. Also, it was somewhat surprising that Stults had such a strong start in that night game against the White Sox. Stults is now just 2-2 in ten night games in his career and he has a 5.61 ERA under the lights. Note that in day games his ERA is nearly two full runs better! Look for the Astros to get some very good cuts against him tonight as they are gathering momentum having won three straight series. Houston at home gets the job done once again tonight and takes Game One of this series as they stay hot.
