Minnesota Wild at Colorado Avalanche

Colorado returns home following a loss at Edmonton that got the second half started and it should be more than fired up for this game. In their last game before the All-Star break, they lost at home to Minnesota 3-2 and it was a game Colorado would desperately want back. Minnesota came into that game on an 11-game winless streak to fact that the Avalanche lost that game has them seething. Colorado trails Minnesota by a single point for eighth place in the Western Conference which makes this home rematch big.

The Wild have not been playing very good especially on the road as mentioned but their first game following the break took a turn for the worst. They were leading Nashville 4-1 with 11 minutes remaining in the game and then the unthinkable took place. The Predators scored four unanswered goals including three in the last 3:21 of the game including the game winner with 21 ticks left. "If you've ever been punched in the stomach really hard, that's pretty much what this one felt like," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said.

That loss is going to be tough to bounce back from and the defeat is likely going to get Niklas Backstrom back in goal for Minnesota. He has the confidence of a solid career against Colorado as he is 8-2-1 in 11 games in Denver, with a .934 save percentage and a 2.12 GAA. That is no doubt solid however he has not been playing well as in his last eight starts, he has given up four goals in five of those games and has help the opposition to fewer than three goals only once.

You hate to throw the 'must win' tag on a game this early but this fits the bill for the Avalanche. A win here leapfrogs them over Minnesota and it is especially important with home games up next against Vancouver on Saturday and Chicago on Tuesday. This is the start of a four-game homestand and it is imperative they get off to a fast start here. Colorado is 10-3 in its last 13 home games while Minnesota, as mentioned, has struggled on the road, going 1-11 in its last 12 games as ax road underdog. 8* (60) Colorado Avalanche
