Texas Rangers at St. Louis Cardinals

We witnessed arguably one of the greatest baseball games ever. Unfortunately we were on the losing side as the Rangers had a three-run lead in the seventh, a two-run lead in the eighth, a two-run lead in the ninth and another two-run lead in the 10th and failed to bring home the championship. Making it worse, they became the first team in history to come within one strike of winning a World Series title in two separate innings and come out with a loss. Can they rebound like the 1975 Reds or fold like the 1986 Red Sox?

It is pretty easy to take the Cardinals in this game simply because of what happened last night, momentum on their side and their ace on the hill. However, this Texas team has gone through a lot and it has performed extremely well under pressure. We only need to look back on August 25th. That was the last time the Rangers have lost consecutive games. Texas has played 46 consecutive games without losing two in a row, going 14-0 after losses including a 5-0 record in the playoffs, winning by a combined 36-15.

Matt Harrison gets the call for Texas and while many think it is the wrong move, I think he will be just fine. He had a rough outing in his first World Series start but we can blame some of that on a blown call and an error as he ended up allowing only three earned runs. Harrison started three games under National League rules during the regular season, going 1-1 with a 2.61 ERA and his ERA on the road is a solid 3.05 in 17 road starts with Texas going 12-5 in those games.

St. Louis is hitting just .212 against lefties over its last 10 games and is 1-7 in their its eight home games against left-handed starters. The Rangers are 7-0 in Harrison's last seven road starts.

The Cardinals counter with Chris Carpenter and there will be many backing the veteran but one of those will not be us. He has been outstanding this season and he has been outstanding in the playoffs. With the exception of one bad start when he was also pitching on three days rest as he was hammered by Philadelphia. This is the third time this series that the Rangers have seen Carpenter and that is a huge edge. When facing the Rangers for a third time or more this season, pitchers were 7-15 with a 5.31 ERA. 10* (965) Texas Rangers

Jake Arrieta has been either really good or really bad this year and I expect to see the latter tonight. He is coming off consecutive horrible starts at home against the Rangers and Rays to push his ERA to 5.21 on the season and while he has been better on the road, this is not the ... read more
