San Diego State Aztecs at UNLV Runnin' Rebels

To no surprise, the Mountain West Conference is a logjam with five teams within two games of each other. San Diego is leading the way with a game lead over UNLV and New Mexico so this has marquee written all over it. The Aztecs had won 11 straight games before getting pounded at Colorado St. by 17 points. They have bounced back with two straight wins but they came against Boise St. and TCU at home and neither were the dominating wins many thought would take place.

The Rebels meanwhile are coming off a loss at Wyoming last Saturday by a bucket so they have had a full week to stew about it. After winning consecutive road games in overtime, UNLV righted the ship with a home blowout of Colorado St. before that tough loss last week. The Rebels are 13-0 at home and have been obliterating the opposition by an average of 22.1 ppg. This includes wins over the aforementioned Rams by 19 points and New Mexico by 17 points, both of which are part of the five-team race.

The first conference loss for UNLV came at San Diego St. exactly four weeks ago. The Rebels went into that game as a road favorite and exited with a two-point loss after a winning shot by the Aztecs with less than a second remaining. That sets up a payback situation here but the Rebels will be out for more as they have lost the last six meetings as well as nine of the last 10 so they have something to prove. San Diego St. has covered in every one of those wins, five as dogs so the Rebels know what is at stake.

Senior forward Chace Stanback has had a rough stretch and scored only two points after taking just two shot last week against Wyoming. He has scored seven points or less in four of his last five road games including the first meeting against the Aztecs so he will be ready for a breakout and his production is vital. UNLV has not lost consecutive games this season as it is 3-0 following a loss thus far.
