New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers

Take the NY Giants over San Francisco

This year's version of the playoffs is similar to last year's when Green Bay continuously went on the road facing better teams, statistically, but kept winning.  That is what the Giants are doing.  Whether they can make it through the 49ers is the big question.  Last week's offensive explosion late in the fourth quarter by San Fran was very surprising.  It looked like Alex Smith had channeled Joe Montana on some of his passes.  It is hard to imagine him recreating that again.

In this game we have a team, the 49ers, whose body of work for the entire season is definitely superior to New York's.  However, if you just look at the late season surge of the Giants, that would be the team you would place your wager on.

I like the fact that New York has gotten 17 sacks in their last 4 games with a now-healthy defensive line and that San Fran has allowed a sad 27 sacks in their last 7 games.  I'm going to go with the team with an unbelievable amount of momentum behind a quarterback I trust, one with a pedigree of success, especially in post--season action.  The Giants have Super Bowl and a vast plus of post-season experience as they still have 15 players from their 2007 Super Bowl winning team.

Compare that to the 49ers making a postseason appearance for the first time in nine years.  Add in the fact that they won by a dramatic comeback touchdown with nine seconds left on the clock and you have to like the Giants.  Oh, don't forget the fact that the 49ers had the advantage of a +4 turnover margin against the Saints.  It also cannot be ignored the Giants ranking 28th in offensive red zone efficiency.

And one final point to take into consideration, the method I use to evaluate strength of schedule shows the 49ers with the absolute easiest schedule in the NFL while the Giants played the third toughest. The Giants win outright.

Take the Giants.
