In Game 3, both teams picked up the pace. San Antonio started Manu Ginobili to help jump start the offense. New Orleans was double-teaming Tim Duncan in the first two games. The Spurs offense was sputtering. The Spurs wanted to avoid Duncan being double-teamed and get Tony Parker and Ginobili more open shots. After averaging 72 field goal attempts in the first two games, the Spurs hoisted 85 shot attempts in their victory in Game 3.
The Hornets didnt want San Antonio to have time to set up their half-court defense on their home court. While New Orleans led at halftime, the Spurs didnt fold in the third quarter as they did in the games in New Orleans.
However, the Spurs defense is still not performing in its normal way. New Orleans is averaging a shade over 100 points while hitting over 49% of their field goal attempts. In the three playoff games against the Spurs, the lowest offensive efficiency rating the Hornets have had is a 108.5. During the regular season against the Spurs, New Orleans averaged 7 more points a game than San Antonio and also a very healthy overall efficiency rating of 8.25 better than the Spurs
Look for New Orleans to increase their defensive intensity. The Spurs offense has been inconsistent going back to an April 4th game against Utah. Even against the defensively-challenged Phoenix Suns, San Antonio couldnt shoot above 40% in their final two games of that series.
In Game 3 in Dallas of the first playoff series, New Orleans fell short losing by ten points. In the next game, the Hornets beat the Mavs by 13 holding Dallas to 36% shooting. I wouldnt be surprised to see the Hornets win this game outright.
