ATS: SMU Mustangs +3.5 (-110)
WIN for +1.82 unit(s)
SMU Mustangs at Pittsburgh Panthers
01/07 1:00 PM EST CF (265) SMU VS (266) PITTSBURGH
Take: (265) SMU.
Reason: Pitt had a tough season (6-6 SU, 8-3 ATS) and a tougher offseason, as first-year coach Todd Graham decided to jump ship after one short season and head to coach Arizona State. Graham's departure, along with the departure of the three assistants to Arizona several weeks ago, has left the staff short-handed for the game. Defensive coordinator Keith Patterson is the team's interim head coach, the fifth head coach at Pitt in the past 13 months as he joins Dave Wannstedt, interim coach Phil Bennett, Mike Haywood and Graham. Junior QB Tino Sunseri (10 TDs, 10 INTs, 2,433 yards) wasn’t sharp and they lost star RB Ray Graham (958 yards, 5.8 ypc) as he missed the final 4+ games with a serious knee injury. That was in a 35-20 victory over UConn, and Graham entered the Connecticut game as Division I-A's second-leading rusher (134.1 yards per game). Pitt also lost two other starters to season-ending injuries -- redshirt freshman offensive guard Matt Rotheram and junior receiver Cam Saddler. Pitt has lost six players to season-ending injuries as Graham, Saddler and Rotheram joined sophomore safety Jason Hendricks (shoulder), senior OG Chris Jacobson (knee) and freshman WR Salath Williams (shoulder). SMU (7-5) made a bowl for Coach June Jones last season and is on a 7-3 run. His passing attack is averaging 25.7 points and 277.8 yards passing and returns 18 starters, including 10 on offense. Junior QB Kyle Padron (31 TDs, 14 INTs in 2010) is sitting as Jones has turned to senior QB J.J. McDermott (16 TDs, 16 INTs, 3,182 yards). There are 3 strong wide outs in hunior WR Darius Johnson (998 yards, 7 TDs), 5-9 senior WR Cole Beasley (954 yards) and senior WR Terrance Wilkerson (545 yards). SMU fans also stormed the field after a fourth-down pass from No. 20 TCU fell incomplete in overtime, clinching a 40-33 upset of the Horned Frogs. The offense had 461 yards (349 passing). SMU also had an impressive 38-17 home roasting of a strong Central Florida defense, rolling up 440 yards (358 passing). McDermott was 20 of 31 for 358 yards. The defense allows 24.5 ppg, good despite giving up 46 to Texas A&M, 38 to Tulsa and 37 to Houston, so the value is all with the Mustangs. Play SMU!
