Butler Bulldogs at Duke Blue Devils
It's David vs Goliath here on Monday as the perennial powerhouse Duke goes up against the mid-major conference representative, Butler. Duke really made mince meat out of a very good West Virginia club and now everyone is saying the Cinderella dream is over for Butler. Butler beat a one of the bet in a Tom Izzo coached club. But what's really amazing is that the Bulldogs won despite shotting just 30% from the field and 24% treys. Seeing those kinds of numbers it's difficult to believe they won the game. It was free throw shooting that really made the difference as Butler had seven extra points from the free line shooting 70% for the game compared to just 55% for the Spartans. It was an ugly win for Butler, but nonetheless it was a win and in fact it was the club's 26th straight since December. In looking at this matchup I have Butler with only two games where they received my personal game performance rating of 100 or more. Duke on the other hand is much more explosive as they showed against a very good Mountaineers team. The Blue Devils also had ratings of 100 or more in 16 games this season. Talent wise, I have to side with Duke. The chance I see for Butler in this game is slowing the pace, which will compromise those ratings. Duke's size will present a problem for Butler and if they get into foul trouble then depth becomes a big issue for the Bulldogs. Bottom line is that all the advantages appear to line up under Duke. Without getting caught up in all the Cinderella talk, Duke should win this game. However, the oddsmaker have already factored that into the line. I'm going to take Butler here with the points and count on the Bulldogs keeping this score low and Duke in the 60's. Butler can cover this game if they can keep Duke down, hit their 3's and most importantly - stay out of foul trouble. I realize this is a lot to ask out of the underdog, but we've seen it done before (NC State, Villanova) and Butlter has been bucking the odds the entire tournament with big winers over Syracuse and Kansas State. So take the points here on Monday and lets hope for a low scoring game where Butler does best. Good Luck!!
