Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs

At 8:35 pm, our selection is on the San Antonio Spurs over the Los Angeles Lakers.  Gregg Popovich's crew has, slowly but surely, creeped up the NBA Power Rating charts, as they're starting to play a little bit better after a slower-than-expected start.  Admittedly, the Spurs have had their problems vs. the league's elite (they've won just three games vs. winning teams this year), but the most important measure of a team's quality (its scoring margin) ranks the Spurs among the league's powers.  San Antonio is outscoring its foes by 6.3 ppg.  Los Angeles, with the league's top record at 29-8, is only defeating its foes by 7.0 ppg.  And that's after playing 24 of its first 37 games at home in the cozy confines of the Staples Center (San Antone, though, isn't far behind with 22 home and 13 road games thus far).  At home, the Spurs have a positive scoring margin of 9.1 ppg, while the Lakers are only +1.4 ppg on the road.  Los Angeles has covered just six of its previous 17 games, while the Spurs are 6-3 ATS their last nine, and 10-6 ATS their last 16.  This is a "statement game" for the Spurs, who desperately want to prove they belong among the NBA's elite.  And it certainly won't hurt their cause to go up against a Lakers squad that will be without Pau Gasol.  NBA Roadkill on the Spurs.  Good luck, as always...Al McMordie.
