Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees

At 7:55pm our selection is on the New York Yankees over the Philadelphia Phillies.  Charlie Manuel's decision to start righthanded veteran Pedro Martinez may make for some good story-lines, it could also prove to be a mistake.  While it's true that Martinez threw seven scoreless innings in game two of the NLCS, that was against a Dodger team that went to sleep in the post-season, as Los Angeles only hit .249 as a team in the playoffs and only .232 in the NLCS.  The Phillies are obviously gambling that lefthander Cole Hamels will pitch better at home than on the road, as has been his M.O. all season with Hamels going 7-5 with a 3.76 ERA at Citizens Bank Park vs. 3-6 with a 4.99 ERA on the road.  The problem with that strategy is that Hamels lone start against the Yankees this season was in the Bronx, and he pitched extremely well there, allowing only two earned runs in six innings in a no-decision.  The other problem with starting Martinez in this game is that although the 38-year-old has an esteemed Major League career, including success in the post-season, he is only 11-11 lifetime against the Yankees and 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in six postseason appearances against them.  Finally, the Yankees fall into a 100% angle that hasn't lost in nine seasons:  in the last nine World Series, the home team is 9-0 in Game 2.  Take the Yankees.  As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
