Tennessee Volunteers at Virginia Tech Hokies

At 7:30 pm, our selection is on the Tennessee Volunteers plus the points over Virginia Tech, as Tennessee falls into several of my best bowl systems (which have records of 65-25, 97-61, 68-37, 36-13 and 44-13 ATS). I've believed that Virginia Tech has been overrated for much of this season. It opened the season with a 34-24 loss to #1-ranked Alabama, but that score was deceptive. Alabama thrashed the Hokies on the stat card, as the Tide gained 498 yards to Va Tech's 155! Similarly, the Hokies then defeated Nebraska in Week 3, but that was a very lucky win, as it took a late score (on the heels of a defensive mishap) to enable the win. Even still, the Hokies were outgained 343 to 278. Virginia Tech did end its season with four wins, but those came against real weak opponents (Virginia, NC State, Maryland and E. Carolina). Before those two wins, Va Tech lost two straight games and, not so coincidentally, those were against North Carolina and Georgia Tech -- both quality foes. The Hokies are a miserable 1-6 ATS when priced from -3 to -10 points, and Tennessee is a solid 40-26 ATS when playing away from home vs. winning teams. The Volunteers were 2-0 in this situation this season, with narrow losses (but ATS wins) vs. Florida and Alabama. And Tennessee even outgained Bama 341 to 256 (a MUCH different statistical outcome than the Hokies' game vs. Bama). And, as impressively, Tennessee held Florida to its SEASON LOW in yards from scrimmage (323 yards). College Football Underdog of the Month on Tennessee. Good luck, as always...Al McMordie.
