MONEYLINE: St. Louis Cardinals -109
LOSS for -5 unit(s)
Philadelphia Phillies at St. Louis Cardinals
At 8:05pm our selection is on the St. Louis Cardinals over the Philadelphia Phillies. This game features a matchup of two veteran righthanders whose seasons have been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. 28-year-old Brett Myers started the season strong and had some brilliant outings but pretty soon started getting hammered in a good number of his starts and his losses and ERA ballooned to the point where he accepted a demotion to the minors to work things out. He's back now and has had one decent start and one not-so-decent start. The Cardinals' 29-year-old Todd Wellemeyer also had a strong start to the season, but then missed some time as well, but for a different reason than Myers. You can throw out Wellemeyer's last start against the Phillies on June 13 -- his worst start of the season and probably one of the poorest outings of his career -- as he was pitching in that game with a bad elbow. That injury bothered him through most of June and caused his numbers to take a turn for the worse, although the Cards were able to rehab him without placing him on the DL. Now he's back, and like Myers, he will be watched very carefully. So far, so good as Wellemeyer has now pitched back-to-back games in which he has only given up two earned runs. So now his team is hopeful that he will find the form that made him such a big contributor back in April and May. Our key stat here is that the Phils are 3-13 in Myers' last 16 road starts, and Myers' victory Tuesday at Washington was just his 2nd win in his last 15 starts. TV Game of the Year on St. Louis. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
