Los Angeles Dodgers at Milwaukee Brewers

Photo_mlb At 1:05pm, our selection is on the Milwaukee Brewers over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Dodger righthander Chad Billingsley was set to have a breakout season in 2008, but so far the breakout hasn't happened. There is no doubt that Billingsley is a very talented pitcher with particularly high strikeout numbers, but he is also one of the most inconsistent starters in the game right now. As an example, in 2008 Billingsley has started games which were won by the Dodgers by scores of 5-1, 7-1, and 13-1, but he has also started games in which his team has been beaten by scores of 1-0, 2-1, 4-1, and 5-0. The lack of run support is certainly nothing new for any Dodger starter, but for Billingsley, the biggest problem has been that he has not been in control of his own destiny very much as he only has one start on the year (out of a total of seven) that has been longer than six innings. Billingsley will have to prove that he can go deeper into games if he is to become an elite member of this rotation. There is no doubt that a healthy Ben Sheets is very definitely an elite starter. The problem in the past has been keeping this ace healthy for an entire season. Sheets is healthy now and having one of his best seasons ever. Sheets' ERA didn't rise above two runs until his sixth start in the beginning of May, and he has been as dominating as any pitcher. Milwaukee's offense is also 100% healthy and the Dodgers' is not, with injuries to Garciaparra and Furcal. And while Andruw Jones is healthy (as far as we know), he might as well be on the DL by the way he is playing. He is by far the biggest free-agent bust of the 2008 season. Take the Brewers. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
