Washington Nationals at Baltimore Orioles

Photo_mlb At 7:05pm our selection is on the Baltimore Orioles over the Washington Nationals. Interleague play starts tonight and a few of the games are cross-town rivalries, like the Yankees and Mets, and this game falls in that category as well, as Washington and Baltimore are only 35 miles apart. While this is not a heated rivalry (yet), it nonetheless has some significance, especially this year with each of these teams doing better than expected. The Orioles are a very surprising 21-19 and coming off of a big 2-game home sweep of the Red Sox, while the Nats, although sporting a losing record at 17-24, are still doing better than most people had thought and they themselves are coming off of a HUGE series against the Mets which saw them take three of four games at Shea Stadium. The latter part is surprising as the Nats have been quite horrible on the road this season. You can point to a few different factors in the O's success, but the one that stands out has been the performance of their bullpen. In both of the wins against Boston, they came back from deficits and it was their bullpen that kept their offense in the game long enough to wear down the Sox' shaky relief pitching. That pattern should continue tonight as Washington's hitting is atrocious, its bullpen is suspect, and all lefthander Garrett Olson needs to do is give his team five to six strong innings. And if the offense can score about three runs against righthander Shawn Hill, then that should be enough for the Baltimore bullpen to protect. If you need any more proof of the pitiful state of the Nats bats, look no further than Hill who, despite having a dazzling ERA of 2.66 in his last three starts, is winless during that time. The run support just isn't there and I don't see that changing any time soon -- especially with Nick Johnson going on the DL. Take the Orioles. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
