MONEYLINE: Detroit Tigers -108
WIN for +4.63 unit(s)
Detroit Tigers at Baltimore Orioles
At 7:05pm our selection is on the Detroit Tigers over the Batlimore Orioles. Both of these teams only had one player in Tuesday night's All-Star game and while that was to be expected for the Orioles, it is certainly a bit shocking that the team that many predicted would win the American League this year only had a single representative to the mid-summer classic. Detroit's versatile infielder Carlos Guillen certainly did not embarrass himself with a double in his three at-bats, but it was Baltimore's closer George Sherrill who really opened eyes when he was called upon with two outs in the top of the twelfth inning of a tie game to face one of the National League's best hitters (Adrian Gonzalez). All Sherrill did was strike out Gonzalez on three straight pitches before going on to pitch 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball putting the AL in position to win the game in the bottom of the 15th. Some thought the Oriole closer should have been named the MVP of the game, but that didn't happen. The bad news for the O's is that they have to play the only AL game on today's schedule two nights after the All Star Game and that means that Sherrill will probably not be available after his longest outing of the season. The other bad news for the O's is that tonight's starter, lefthander Garrett Olson has really been struggling lately after getting off to a very promising start to the season. Olson has given up at least four earned runs in five of his last six starts. He has not faced Detroit before in his career, but is likely in for a rude greeting tonight as Detroit has already beaten Baltimore in five of the six games they've played in '08. And the Tigers are 18-7 this season vs. in games against a lefty starter. Finally, Kenny Rogers is a solid 30-12 over his last 42 nighttime starts, and Baltimore is 45-75 vs. lefties the past three seasons. Take the Tigers. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
