Pittsburgh Pirates at Arizona Diamondbacks

At 9:40pm our selection is on the Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks 'under' the total.  Prior to the trades of two of the their best offensive players, outfielders Xavier Nady and Jason Bay, the Pirates actually had some pretty decent team hitting statistics.  But now that Nady (16 HR, 61 RBI) and Bay (23 HR, 67 RBI) are gone, don't expect this kind of offense to continue for this Pittsburgh squad.  Combined, Nady and Bay were responsible for about one-third of the Pirates' round-trippers and almost one-quarter of their RBI.  In their recently-concluded three-game series at Chicago's Wrigley Field, usually a very hitter friendly park for visiting teams, the Pirates only managed to score a total of nine runs.  The D-Backs have had hitting problems for most of the season, as their overall team batting average of .251 would attest, and unlike their rivals from Los Angeles, Arizona didn't do anything at the trade deadline to add punch to its lineup.  In fact, in the just-concluded four-game series against those Dodgers, the D-Backs only managed to score 2.25 runs per game.  Tonight, they are likely to get another excellent start at home from ace Danny Haren, and even though his mound opponent, Herrera, has a high ERA, I look for a very low-scoring game, as Arizona has gone 'under' the total in 11 of its last 12 games vs. starters with ERAs over 5.70 per game.  Take the 'under'.  As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
