ATS: San Diego Chargers +5.5 (-110)
WIN for +2.73 unit(s)
San Diego Chargers at Pittsburgh Steelers
I'm taking the points with SAN DIEGO. Despite the fact that San Diego won and Pittsburgh lost, one could easily argue that the Steelers were more impressive than the Chargers last week. That's because Pittsburgh was playing against a much tougher opponent. The Steelers led most of the game but blew it late in the fourth and lost 24-20 to the "mighty" Colts. On the other hand, the Chargers barely managed to squeak by the "lowly" Chiefs, winning 20-19.
Although it may only be on a subconscious level, the majority of the betting public will have the following mindset: "If San Diego was 'lucky' to beat Kansas City and Pittsburgh was 'unlucky' to lose to Indianapolis, then surely the Steelers will bounce back with a big win here."
While that perception has helped to give us excellent line value, its been my experience that the opposite is often true in the NFL. Tough losses can be deflating and aren't always that easy to bounce back from. Conversely, close wins can often help a team build positive momentum. The players feel good about the victory but also know that they were fortunate and that they can't afford to letdown at all the following week. Note that the Chargers are 10-1 SU the last 11 times they were coming off a victory over a division opponent.
Yes, the Steelers bring the much better defensive stats to the table. However, I believe that the Chargers' defense is currently better playing better than the overall numbers indicate and much better than most people give them credit for. Yes, San Diego did get involved in a shootout vs. the Saints a few weeks back. That was in London though and the matchup involved two teams and quarterbacks which were happy to air it out. Excluding that game, we find that they've allowed an average of only 17.4 points in their last games. Those five opponents scored 18, 17, 10, 23 and 19 points.
Of course, the Chargers have significantly better offensive stats. San Diego is averaging 27.1 points per game and 349.1 total yards. Pittsburgh is averaging 22 points per game and 287 total yards. Rothlisberger has proven to be an excellent quarterback in the past. However, he's not 100% healthy these days and has really been struggling of late. In fact, a closer look shows that he's thrown eight interceptions in his past 10 quarters and that he's only thrown one touchdown pass while being sacked 10 times during that span. The Steelers have now given up a whopping 31 sacks. For the season, Rothlisberger's passer rating is now 76.1, which is only 25th best in the league. On the other hand, Rivers brings a 106.3 passer rating to the table (best in the AFC) and he leads the NFL with 21 touchdown passes.
Playing in the Eastern Time Zone can be tough for West Coast based teams like the Chargers. However, it's not nearly as difficult when the games don't start at 1:00 EST, which is still 10:00 am out west. Today's game kicks-off at 4:15, which I feel will make the Chargers' task much easier. While the Chargers have had some trouble covering as favorites, this is just the second time that they've been an underdog this season. Back in mid-September they opened as a slight favorite at Denver but closed as a +1.5 underdog. They lost that game by one point, so that was either a win or push for most San Diego bettors. Counting that result as a push, the Chargers are an outstanding 14-3-3 ATS the last 20 times they were getting points. I feel they're providing excellent value again here. *Non-Divisional Best Bet
