Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles Lakers

Photo_nba I'm playing on the Pistons and Lakers to finish UNDER the total. The Pistons were involved in a relatively high-scoring game last night. That was at Oakland vs. the defensively-challenged Warriors though. The Warriors are currently allowing 105.4 points per game (2nd worst in the league) and 107 per game at home, which is the worst mark in the league. Tonight, the Pistons go to the opposite end of the spectrum as they'll be facing a Lakers team which ranks #1 in the league in terms of both points allowed (86.7) and points allowed (82) on its homecourt. Yes, the Lakers also score a lot of points. However, the 104.3 which they are averaging at home is less than Golden State's 106.6 when the Warriors are playing at home. Overall, the Lakers are averaging 104.7 to Golden State's 102.6. In other words, it's fair to say that the Lakers and Warriors have been "roughly" equal offensively but that the Lakers have been "significantly" better defensively. Indeed, the Lakers are allowing 25 points less per game on their home floor than the Warriors are. Yet, despite that massive difference, tonight's over/under line isn't really all that much lower than last night's. I feel that provides us with excellent value.

Of course, the Pistons have always been known for their excellent defensive play. While they've been fairly mediocre on that side of the ball so far this season (allowing 95.5 per game) they've always played well defensively when matched up against the Lakers. In last season's two meetings, the Pistons held the Lakers to an average of 96 points. The Pistons only averaged 90.5 though and both games stayed below the total. Looking back further and we find the UNDER at 4-0 the last four series meetings and 11-4 the last 15 times that the Pistons faced the Lakers here in LA.

Different teams react differently to playing the second of back to back games. This is the Pistons first time in that situation this season but last year they had a tendency to be involved in low-scoring games when playing the second of back to back road games. In fact, the UNDER is 13-3 the last 16 times that they played in that situation, dating back to last December. Looking at some more stats and we find that the Lakers have seen the UNDER go 6-2 the last eight times they were favored in the -9.5 to -12 range and 15-5 their last 20 against teams from the Central. I expect those numbers to improve here. *Blue Chip
