MONEYLINE: Chicago Cubs -138
WIN for +3.62 unit(s)

Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs

Chicago returns to the friendly confines of Wrigley after taking all three matchups with Pittsburgh in the Steel City. After pounding out 26 runs in the first two games of the series, the Cubs relied on strong pitching in Wednesday's 2-0 victory.

Chicago has now won five in a row and 16 of its last 20 tilts to open up a six-game lead in the NL Central. The Cubs have also been dominant at home this season, having amassed a stellar 49-19 record at Wrigley Field.

The home park has also provided plenty of success for Ryan Dempster this season. The Chicago starter, who will take the mound in tonight's opener, is 12-2 with a 2.66 earned run average in 16 outings at Wrigley so far in 2008.

Dempster's also been quite good on the road this year, as his 15-5 overall record and 2.85 ERA will attest. The All-Star right-hander also brings a three-start win streak into this evening's clash and hasn't given up more than two runs in any of his last seven appearances.

The converted closer posted another home win when he limited Washington to one run on eight hits through 7 1/3 innings on Saturday.

Dempster has yet to face the Phillies this season but owns a 4-3 record with a 4.67 ERA in 19 lifetime games against Philadelphia, 12 of which have been starts.

The Phillies hand the ball to ace Cole Hamels tonight in hopes of getting this series off to a desired start. The standout lefty comes in off back-to-back victories over the Dodgers and Padres in which he's surrendered just three runs and walked no one over a combined 15 innings. The two strong efforts have improved Hamels to 11-8 with a 3.20 ERA in 27 starts this season.

Hamels delivered a gem against the Cubs back on April 12, when the 24-year-old held Chicago to one hit over seven shutout innings in leading Philadelphia to a 7-1 win at Citizens Bank Park. He also possesses a 3-1 record in four career starts versus the Cubs, along with a 3.00 ERA.
