WHY THE NBA PLAYOFFS ARE UNFAIR
by: Mr East
The NBA made a decision 22 years ago to change the format of its 7 game series playoff rounds from 2-2-1-1-1, to 2-3-2. It has made the playoff games totally unfair. The decision was made purely for the economics of travel. By creating a 2-3-2 format it ensured that the travel was limited to 2 trips during the course of the series if it was extended to 6 games or more. The old 2-2-1-1-1 system, meant that if the series went 6 games the travel became both an economic burden to the teams envolved, but physically demanding on the players as well. When the series became a 7 game ordeal, it was even worse, meaning the road team had to travel 5 times during the course of the series. This all was easy for anyone to buy into, as the undue travel would seem to handicap the level of play. What it really did was ensure the entegrity of the gruelling 82 game NBA schedule, and allow the winner a decided advantage when it came time for the final test. I'm not one to make a stand without the facts, but I'll present them here, and allow you to decide for yourself.
The change took place in 1984-85, and since then, the team with the homecourt advantage has been 19-4 in the championship round. The 21 years have seen just 3 finals make it to a game 7. The 13 years preceding the change in format saw the team with the homecourt advantage go 6-7 in NBA finals. So is such a change coincidental with remarkably different results, or is the change condusive to remarkably different results? It is quite clear in looking at the change, and analyzing the outcomes, of the distinct disadvantage put in the hands of the team without the homecourt advantage. It is apparent from results, that playing 2 on the road, then 2 at home, then 1 road, 1 home, and 1 road, made the opportunity of winning the home games more likely. The result of the change is staggering, and the road team is getting hosed by economics.
The results over the last 23 years show that only 1 time did the road team win all 3 of the consecutive home games in the new 2-3-2 format, just 1 time!!! This essentially means, they not only have to break serve and win one on the road, to offset the 4-3 homecourt advantage of the opponent, but win 2 to break the advantage, and thus a 19-4 history to the team with the decided advantage. These numbers are completely different than the 2-2-1-1-1 format for the team with the disadvantage. The 13 years prior to the change the team with just the 3 home games, and disadvantage, won all their home games 5 of those 13 years, vs 1 of the 23 years since the change!!!! it has changed a system that was balanced, and condusive to competitive results, to one that is completely tilted to the top team. Those 13 years also produced three 7 game series, which it took 23 years to accomplish under the new format. Oh, by the way, since the new format and those 7 game series? They were all won by the homecourt advantaged team! The 3 before the change? Two were won by the underdog!!!!
What was declared an economic decison has altered the results of the crowned glory of the NBA forever. Time to blow the whistle, and call a foul!!!!
