Turning Sows Ears into Silk Purses

First of all, let me make clear that at Nite Owl Sports, we do not view sports betting as some recreational, gentlemanly form of “wagering.” Rather, we see it not only as a “business” but as a daily “street fight” with the sports books and their line makers, where we as sports handicappers and players should play “fair and square,” but also should use every weapon and angle at our disposal to prevail in that war as often as possible. And since our primary “adversary” in this business is the point spread, or the “obstacle” as it is sometimes called, a big part of being victorious in that battle is getting point spreads which are as favorable as possible. So this article will be devoted to ways in which to accomplish that.

The first method is that of “buying” half points, the “cost” of which is typically an extra “ten cents” of “juice,” or -120 odds, although in football, particularly in the NFL, when one buys onto or off of the two key numbers of 3 and 7, doing so is more “expensive” at most books (typically -130 or even -135 at some books), prohibitively expensive in my opinion. And while we often advise our subscribers to buy up or buy down for half a point to a “whole number” if the point spread for one of our picks is not a whole number (e.g., buy up from +6.5 to +7 if we like the dog or down from -6.5 to -6 if we like the fave) as long as the price of doing so is a reasonable -120, we rarely suggest “coughing up” -130 or 135 odds to buy onto or off of 3 or 7 in football, preferring instead (in the case of buying onto or off of 3, or to/from 2.5) to consider playing the money line. And while we rarely suggest buying up or down in the case of a total in college hoops or NBA, or even in college FB, which does not seem like a very high percentage move, we do often suggest doing so in the NFL, when the totals line is at a key number (e.g., 34 or 37 in a game expected to be low scoring, 41 or 44 in a game where average scoring is expected, and 48, 51 or 52 in a game expected to be high scoring. Also note the following two things about buying points – (i) the extra “juice” only comes into play if the bet loses, and (ii) all it takes is one bail out (turning a loser into a “push” or a “push” into an ATS “cover”) with a half point buy to make up for the extra juice you spend on half point “buys” where it doesn’t help.

Another one of the weapons I use in sports handicapping where it is available (football and basketball) is the teaser, typically limited to two or three teams and/or totals, where one gets a betting line which is 5, 5.5 or 6 points better (in basketball) or 6, 6.5 or 7 points (in football) than the actual betting line for each team or total, but then both or all three teams or totals in the teaser need to cover the “teased” lines for the teaser to “cash.” While some say teasers are “sucker bets” or that if one is confident his bets will cover, he shouldn’t be risking even more money to get better “lines” for those bets, I simply don’t agree with either of those generalizations. As much as we like to think all of our bets are going to be successful (or we presumably wouldn’t make them), it’s a simple fact of life that in the long run, at least 40% of them will lose, and that many of those losses (especially in college hoops and NFL) will be by a couple of points, often determined by one or two questionable officials calls (or non-calls) late in the game, whether a 9 point dog down by 8 points commits a “meaningless” foul with a few seconds left, and whether the resulting free throws are made or missed by the favored team, etc., etc. – we’ve all been there before, but for those of you who have forgotten, just look at what happened in a couple of our recent hoops picks that just barely lost ATS but “cashed” when included in the teasers that we recommended to our subscribers in the supporting write-ups for those picks. In college hoops we had four picks Thursday night, with our two strongest ones (Vandy over Alabama, both on the full game and first half lines) not only covering easily but also victorious SU, while the other two suffered excruciatingly close losses (Wash at +1 losing by 3 to Cal and UCLA at +2 losing by 3 at Oregon State). But when Wash and UCLA were included in our recommended 3 team 5 point teaser with Vandy, they covered the teased lines, and the teaser paid off at +160 odds. Similarly, we had a pick on the Under (184.5) that same night in the Dallas-Utah game, where we “unofficially” also suggested to our subscribers that they tease the total up to 190 with Utah, teased to +3.5. And while that Under pick looked like a winner with 182 total points as the final seconds were ticking off the clock in a mad scramble for the ball, but the teaser looked like a loser with the Jazz trailing by 6, Utah finally got possession of the ball and then threw up a “prayer’ at the buzzer from behind the arc, and it went in, to “sink” the Under pick but at least send us to the “pay window” with our teaser.

In a sport such as basketball, where ATS results even more than SU W-L results are often determined by just a point or two and often by seemingly “insignificant” events in the final minute or two of the game or an overtime period, there is definitely a place for teasers in our betting arsenal. In fact, as our regular subscribers well know, our write ups for our college hoops and NBA picks typically suggest that the pick be teased with one or two of our other picks, or with another team which we like but not enough to make them an official pick and thus identify as “teaser bait.”

Just like our customers think all of their bets are going to be successful, we at Nite Owl Sports like to think all of our picks are going to be successful, as well. During our most recent hot streak last weekend and early this week, an incredible three day run where we went 26-3 for +51 units with all of our picks (in NFL, NBA and college hoops), including 14-0 for +43 units on our Play of the Day picks during those three days (see call-out for Nite Owl in Tuesday Top Ten newsletter), we were feeling pretty good about ourselves, but had been in this “business” too long not to realize how quickly one’s sports betting fortunes can turn around, and how humbling that experience can be. As a result, we continued to recommend teasing our picks to other picks, and that really helped us (and those customers who followed our teaser recommendations) at the pay window on Thursday, a day which was unfortunately a rare losing day for our official picks, but where we “turned a sow’s ear into a silk purse” by minimizing the loss on three of those official picks, which lost by a total of 3.5 points but “cashed” as teasers, as detailed above, thereby significantly reducing the “damage” from those narrowly losing picks for those subscribers who followed our teaser recommendations.

My final point on using teasers concerns the importance of getting good “numbers’ with one’s teasers, and how that will determine whether to pay the extra “juice” to get 5.5 points or even 6 (rather than just 5 points) with the teased teams in hoops, or 7 points rather than 6 or 6.5 in football. For example, in hoops, one of my favorite teasers is reducing a 5.5 to 6.5 point fave to –1/2 point, so all they have to do is prevail SU in order to cover their teased line. Also in hoops, when a 5 point teaser will result in a teased line of –2.5 points or +1.5 points, it is better to pay the extra juice to get it to a better “number” like +2 or –2. On the other hand, when the team you like is favored by 5.5 points, there is no reason to pay the extra juice to tease the line to pick or +1/2 with a 5.5 or 6 point teaser, as the extra point or half point in that example is of no consequence, since games are not allowed to end as “ties.” In football, it’s very similar, with the point spread determining how many points you should “buy” and at what price with a teaser. For example, looking at this WE’s two NFL playoff games, and using 2.5 as the consensus line for NYG at SF and 7 as the consensus line for Balt at NE, you should put SF in a 7 point teaser (up to +4.5, past the key ATS numbers of 3 and 4) if you like the 49ers, but not spend the extra juice for 7 points if you like the Giants, as that only gets them to +9.5, which is not much better than the +8.5 points that you would get with a less expensive 6 point teaser. Similarly, with NE -7, there is no reason to “buy” the full 7 points to get them to pick, when a less expensive 6.5 point teaser will get you to -1/2 point, which is just as good. On the other hand, if your lines for these two games are 3 and 7.5, then it’s a different story, especially for teasing NYG and NE, as in that event, a 7 point teaser (teasing NY up to the key number of +10, and NE down to -1/2 so all they need to do is win SU) is clearly the right teaser move. I could give countless other examples, but by now I think you get the picture.

So there you have it -- a “primer” on how and why to improve your winning % by integrating point buying and teasers into your football and basketball betting arsenal.
