Three Stooges Meet Keystone Cops in LSU vs Tenn

After reading one article after another in the Top Ten newsletter, many of which are full of useful betting information and betting tips, and some of which have been contributed by Nite Owl Sports, we at Nite Owl thought it was about time for a sports related article that did not contain any particularly useful betting information but would be entertaining to the readers nonetheless, and fortunately the folks at Top Ten agreed. No, it’s not some “human interest” article about the Hooters Girls at the nearest such establishment, although we thought about it, as we at Nite Owl Sports are partial to HOOTers and their girls, for obvious reasons. Rather, this article gives our reflections on a recent high profile game in college football last WE which had a very bizarre and somewhat controversial ending - in short, a mish-mash of a game which ended with so much pandemonium and so many players from both teams running onto and off of the field that the only thing that could have been added would have been for the 1970s hit “Ball of Confusion” to start blaring over the PA system at Tiger Stadium. And of course, the only such game which fits that description is, drum roll, that Tennessee-LSU “game” last Saturday.

It was not a particularly “pretty” game, with LSU doubling the yardage gained by Tennessee, 434-217, but LSU seeming to “shoot itself in the foot” (with 4 turnovers, including 3 INTs by Tiger QBs) every time that they looked like they had mounted a serious drive. And so with the Vols leading 14-10 but LSU driving (once again), it came down to a crucial fourth down play, in Tenn territory but not yet too deep, where LSU “passing QB” Jarrett Lee drilled a completed pass to keep the drive alive. The Tigers then proceeded to get the ball inside the five yard line, but time was running out with less than 30 seconds left on the game clock and no time outs left, and it being third down. So what does LSU head coach Les Miles call? A running play by Jordan Jefferson from Wildcat formation – “brilliant.” Unfortunately for Miles, Jefferson and LSU, the call fooled no one except for maybe LSU’s offensive line, as it was stopped for no gain. Of course, it apparently never occurred to Coach Miles, who is still recovering from having a brain transplant from an unspecified vegetable, that if he calls a running play on third and goal with less than 30 seconds on the game clock and no time outs left, and the play gets stopped (like it did), then his QB can't spike the ball on 4th down to stop the clock (unless he wants to thereby turn the ball over to the other team, not a good option).

What transpired after that was pure chaos, with legions of players from both teams running onto and off of the field, and LSU trying to get their linemen in a set position so the ball could be snapped to Jefferson (again in Wildcat formation) before the game clock expired and ended the game. In fact, the bizarre ending reminded me of what a movie called "Three Stooges Meet keystone Cops" would look like if they ever made it, and it had a football theme. In any event, the snapped ball sailed over Jefferson’s head because he was not yet ready for it, and the game apparently ended in a huge pile-up of bodies on about the Vols’ 30 yard line. The Tenn players and head coach Derek Dooley were then seen jumping around and hugging each other, celebrating the biggest victory of their lives, or so they thought. But wait, amidst all the chaos is seen a yellow penalty flag, with the refs’ announcement of the penalty barely audible over the “din” from the frenzied crowd. After the mess was finally sorted out and order was restored, it was again announced that Tenn had been called for a delay of game penalty, for having not 12, but 13 men on the field (a violation that replays confirmed). Given a final chance to redeem themselves, the Tigers did not blow it this time, and went in to score from a yard out (the ball having been moved “half the distance” due to the delay of game penalty) on a halfback blast by LSU RB Steven Ridley.

And while I admit that it was probably bad coaching (but understandable under the circumstances) on Tenn's part to place themselves in such an obvious penalty situation by putting 13 men on the field, the real knucklehead in all of this was LSU head coach Les Miles, who made the "beef brain" call (of a running play on third and goal with no time outs left) that started the whole thing, and obviously had no clue what he was going to call on fourth down if the third down running play did not score, which it didn't. And the irony of the whole thing is that the "unsung hero" for LSU is the center who snapped the ball over the QB's head to apparently end the game, and was seen getting “chewed out” on the sidelines shortly after the mishap. And the reason is that if he had waited until the QB was ready, and the clock had ticked off that final second, the play would have never started, and there would be no grounds on which to call the delay of game penalty against Tenn. In any event, the result was an improbable LSU victory thanks to probably the most famous "too many men on the field penalty" since the one called on Kansas in the 1969 Orange Bowl, which gave Penn State a second chance convert a botched two point conversion attempt, which they did, to grab their first Orange Bowl victory, 15-14.

But the one thing I can't figure out about the ending to the LSU-Tenn game, which nobody ever addressed to my knowledge, is why the refs did not also call a penalty on LSU, because with all of the chaos and moving offensive players on and off the field, and the center snapping the ball with not all the linemen even lined up (and thus not even close to being in the required "set position"), LSU surely also committed some kind of procedural penalty, if not delay of game. And I'm not sure if off-setting penalties would have simply negated the play and given LSU one more try from the line of scrimmage (rather than from half the distance), or if the game would be over, because an expired game clock (at either the end of the 2Q or 4Q) cannot be extended by a penalty "on the offense" -- but what about if there are off-setting penalties (against each team) on the final play of the game (or the first half)? I'm not sure.

And as long as we’re talking about bonehead moves by LSU head coach "Les the Mess,” the real reason why LSU is really hurting at QB TY (which was obvious in the game against Tenn, is that Miles totally screwed up the recruiting of current Oregon QB Darron Thomas from his high school in nearby Houston, as Miles had Thomas “in his hip pocket” until pissing him off by first telling him he was his "QB of the future" and then not only continuing to recruit other top high school and JC QBs, but changing Thomas' designation on the LSU depth chart (on the team's web site) from QB to "athlete" and then telling Thomas at his final campus visit that he was a "great athlete who could do a lot of different things." Being understandably soured on at Miles, Thomas then told his HS coach that he no longer wanted to attend LSU, and after a call to Oregon HC Chip Kelly, guess who was at Thomas' home in Houston the next night extolling the virtues of the Emerald State (and the rest is history). So Miles is not only “mentally challenged,” but apparently a bit "squirrely" as well.

But if you thought that Coach Miles had made the dumbest move of the weekend, or the entire college football season so far, you are wrong. That honor belongs to a pair of Baylor sophomore receivers, Willie Jefferson and Josh Gordon, who were found passed out in the drive-thru lane of a Taco Bell in Waco Texas at 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Surprised police found marijuana in their possession, and they were arrested on misdemeanor “possession” charges and suspended indefinitely from the FB team – that must have been some pretty amazing weed.
