Successful NFL Playoff Wagering Strategies

As we now start the final two rounds of TY’s NFL playoffs for each conference, leading up to the Super Bowl, it gets harder to find value on either team and just as difficult to find value betting the over or the under, as with so few games compared to the regular season, the line makers can concentrate heavily on each game, and they typically put out razor sharp lines for these playoff games, knowing that they will get lots of action because there is so much fan interest in the games. And as in this WE’s divisional playoffs round, there are typically at least two games in that four game round priced in that hard to handicap point spread range which we call “no man’s land,” where the home team is favored by 7.5 to 10 points, just like Sunday’s two games, with NE favored by 9 or 9.5 over the Jets and Chicago by 10 over a revamped and energized Seattle team coached by “rookie” head coach Pete Carroll, who while he may be in his first year with the Seahawks, is no stranger to big games, having coached and won plenty of them during his long tenure as head coach for the USC Trojans and having prior NFL experience as well (as a former HC of the NE Pats). This also presents a dilemma for us as professional handicappers with clients, as we don’t want to force picks on these high profile games where we don't feel strongly enough about either the side or total in the game to have an official pick, but we know that our clients will be disappointed if they get nothing at all when we don't have any pick(s) on the game. We recently faced this dilemma last Sunday in the GB-Philly game, where we had strong recommendations to take Philly Under 24.5 points on the individual team totals line, and to tease GB up to +8> with the Under, teased up to 52>, but our strongest pick was on the first half UNDER. Fortunately, our Top Ten subscribers were aware of our successful teaser recommendation as well as our strong (and also successful) recommendation on Philly Under, as we included those unofficial recommendations in the WU of our 1H Under pick, which is just one of the ways that we at Nite Owl Sports “go the extra mile” for our subscribers.

But back to the main point of this article, which is what we can do to still get some value out of these high profile but often hard to handicap NFL playoff games without “forcing” picks, while helping our clients make some money from them, which will make watching them even more enjoyable. And our favorite strategies for accomplishing that objective are to (i) fully utilize the partial game lines when it appears that doing so gives us good value (as we have done on both of today’s NFL playoff games, where five of our eight picks are on the partial game lines), (ii) play individual team totals on one or both of the teams, either in addition to or in lieu of playing the full game total, and (iii) use "progressive" teasers to make tough to beat lines more easily beatable.

In playing partial game lines, the key is to (i) look for good line value on one of the sides and/or totals, and (ii) because getting good line value is not by itself enough to justify making a partial game pick, analyze the scoring patterns of both teams, to determine if you are really getting good value with any of the partial game possibilities which appear to have good line value, or if the partial game results of the teams involved in the game indicate that the side or total with good line value is actually a “sucker play” conjured up by the line maker, whose job, after all, is to make money for his employer, not to make betting these games a pleasant and profitable experience for the bettors. And we do that (look for value with partial game lines as well as the full game lines) at Nite Owl Sports, not only every night in the NBA, but also every week in the NFL, especially in the playoffs, with just four or fewer playoff games each WE, leading up to the Super Bowl. And sometimes, our research reveals that the best value on the partial and full game lines involves betting one way on the full game line, and the other way on one or both of the partial game lines. So it should be no surprise that this WE, half of our TEN picks released so far in the four NFL PO games are partial game picks, including a 4 unit POD (Play of the Day) 1H totals play on tonite’s GB-Atlanta game, the strongest of those ten picks.

The point of using progressive teasers is to enable you to play on teams that you like, often faves in that “no man’s land” that we mentioned earlier, where the home team is favored by 7.5 to 10 points, just like Sunday’s two games, but are reluctant to lay the heavy “lumber” with the fave. Another “no man’s land which can be avoided with a teaser is the +1 to +2.5 “short dog” point spread range that the GB Packers find themselves in tonight at Atlanta – with the Pack being a great ATS play last two years as a road dog of +3>, including 2-0 ATS this season in that role, but having lost 3 close roadies TY (two by 3 and one by 4, including a 3 point loss in Atlanta as 2.5 point dogs like they are again tonite), it’s not “rocket science’ that teasing the Pack up to +8> is a much higher % play than taking them at +2 or 2.5, as well as a better choice (in our opinion) than laying the 2 or 2.5 points with an Atlanta team which (despite their well known home “pedigree”) needed some breaks and a last second FG to beat GB earlier TY at home, and lost to the Saints in their most recent HG vs a playoff team just a few weeks ago. And assuming you cover the first “leg(s)” of a two or 3 team progressive teaser (we NEVER recommend including more than 3 teams in a teaser), you are guaranteed to have a "live" teaser with the final “leg,” at a much more beatable line than the regular point spread on that (second or third) final game. So let’s use Sunday’s two games as an example, and assume that you like both of the faves (Chicago and NE), but are not wild about having to lay > a full TD on each, with the consensus line on both games at -9 for NE and -10 for Chicago. A two team, 7 point teaser would reduce the point spread down to a much more manageable -3 for da Bears and to -2 for NE, and assuming Chicago covers the early game (prevailing by > 3 points), a pretty safe but not fool-proof assumption (since after all, Seattle did beat da Bears SU in Chicago earlier TY for a rare road victory), you would have a "live" teaser on NE at -2, where a NE SU victory by just a FG would cover the teased line. That being the case, there would be little need to play on NE at -9 against the dangerous Jets. Or better yet, you could protect against a 3 point Chicago victory with a “push” vs the teased line of -3 (in which event the best you could hope for with a two teamer would be a “no action” on the teaser if NE covers their end of it) by making it a 7 point 3 teamer, which not only would pay off at anywhere from +140 to +150 odds at most books if all 3 teams cover their teased lines, but would pay off at no worse than -130 with a 3 point Chicago victory (and “push” vs their teased line), provided that the two other teams cover their teased lines. And looking for additional “teaser bait” in today’s games, while we believe neither side is a good play in tonite's GB-Atlanta game, it’s awfully tempting to tease the Pack up to +8.5> points with two other solid teaser picks (Sunday) like Chicago and NE.

Our final technique is to utilize individual team totals picks, usually on one of the two sides, either in addition to a full game side ATS pick and/or a full game totals pick, or in games where we like one of the sides but we don’t like the point spread, and/or we like the Over, based on the good offense of "our" team and/or bad defense of the opponent, but we have concerns about that opponent’s offense scoring enough to carry their share of the "load" to push the final score Over the total. Let’s use the Chicago-Seattle game tomorrow as an example of one of those types of games in the second group -- where we like Chicago but we don’t like laying double digits with a team that has given up 32 ppg in its last 3 home games (albeit to 3 playoff teams much better than 8-9 Seattle), and we kind of like the Over based on Seattle’s horrible defensive #s in their 7 road games TY against decent teams (which excludes their road victory at pathetic Arizona), in which (7 games) they allowed a whopping 31 ppg, but we have concerns about Seattle’s offense (which averaged only 14.5 ppg in those 7 roadies TY against real teams) scoring enough to carry their share of the Over “load.” And if we could only isolate the strength of such an Over play and a play on Chicago at -10 in that game while eliminating the weaknesses of those plays, we’d be in “fat city” – well folks, welcome to playing individual team totals, because it allows us to do just that. For example, if we take Chicago OVER on the individual team totals line (which has not yet been released by any of the major books, but which we estimate at 25.5 or 26 for them, based on the 41 point total for the game and Bears being 10 point faves), we get to take advantage of Seattle’s poor defense and Chicago’s scoring ability shown by their 31 and 38 point outbursts in home victories over Philly and Jets in two of their final 3 home games, while avoiding exposure to the major weakness of an Over play on this game (Seattle’s poor offense on the road) as well as the major weakness of laying double digits with da Bears -- their inconsistent defense, which not only allowed 21 points to Seattle earlier TY (two of Seahags’ 23 points being scored on a sack/safety of Bears’ QB Jay Cutler) but also gave up 32 ppg in Bears’ last 3 home games. To use some examples of likely final scores in this game, a 27-10 Chicago victory is a cover for the Bears but a loser with the OVER 41, while a 27- 20 Bears victory cashes the Over but is a loser ATS for da Bears. But guess what? Both of those scores send us to the “pay window” with Chicago OVER 26.5 or less on the individual team totals line. And guess what else? Both of those scores would also send us to the “pay window” by teasing Chicago to -3 with Over 34.

And the same strategy (using one or more individual team totals picks and/or a side/total teaser) can also be used effectively in the GB-Atlanta game tonite, even though we don’t really like either side. But we won’t go into detail on that one, because we have a strong 3 pick/9 unit totals betting attack strategy in that game, and we don’t want to “tip our hand” as to which way we are going.

As you can see from the foregoing, and if you read any of our past pick write-ups on our (Nite Owl) page on this site, we put a ton of effort and detail into our pick write-ups, with some very good “unofficial” recommendations like individual team totals plays and progressive teasers, in addition to our “official” picks, even if our pick is not that strong, and as a result, our subscribers get a lot of “bang for their buck.”
