Strength vs. Strength in NBA Finals

The NBA finals TY is, like last year’s finals between the Lakers and Celtics, a dream match-up for both the viewers and the networks, who expect block buster ratings and mega bucks of advertising revenue. But like LY and as is often the case in this final round, it’s difficult from a betting/handicapping perspective to go against either team, with both teams obviously well coached, talented enough and playing well enough to have advanced to the championship round, and with big-time “money” players (particularly Dirk Nowitzki for the Mavs and Le Bron James for the Heat) who consistently come through in crunch time. On the one hand, Miami has sure looked good at home in the playoffs, victorious in all 8 playoff HGs and covering ATS in six of them, including 5-0 SU and ATS with an average MOV (margin of victory) of 9.5 points in their 5 playoff home games in the last two rounds, against defensively tough Boston and Chicago. And if the Heat get rolling with victories in games one and two at home, they could be dangerous, even in Dallas, as they are 41-28 ATS after a SU victory. And while the Heat was a surprisingly poor 9-18-1 ATS after a loss this season, note that in the playoffs they were 3-0 both SU and ATS after their rare SU losses in each round.

And the Heat seems to have gotten past the early and mid-season problems they were having closing out games against good teams, even at home, with consistently shaky 4Qs in regular season HGs vs PO caliber teams from November through early March, including a 5 point 4Q deficit in their two point home loss to Mavs on Dec. 20. Note that in those last five playoff HGs, the Heat outscored their opponents by an average of 8 points in the 4Q and OT in the four games (of the five) where they needed a 4Q surge (i.e., where they either trailed or had a lead of less than 5 points after 3Qs). One reason for Miami’s recent success, particularly late in the game, is that this team not only gets to the FT line often (they took 139 FTs to 110 for Chicago last round, including a 100-64 edge in FTs attempted in the last 3 games of the series and a 33-21 FT edge in game 5 in Chicago), but they also make a high % of their free throws — 115 for 139 (83%) in Bulls series and 24 in a row to close out that key game 4 OT victory. And their rotation, in flux for months, finally has clarity and stability, with Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller having neutralized two of the Bulls’ biggest advantages (their bench and rebounding) over Heat in the Bulls’ four straight victories over Heat (3 regular season and game one of the playoffs), and as a result grabbing four straight series victories of their own to close out the series 4-1 over the top- seeded Bulls.

On the other hand, the Mavs were one of the “top dogs” in the NBA TY as road dogs (at 20-6 ATS including the playoffs) and “lightning in a bottle” as small to medium road dogs against playoff caliber teams in the point spread range (of 1-6 points) for game one and likely also for their other upcoming series games in Miami, going an even better 13-3 ATS in that role, and were 6-0-1 ATS and 5-2 SU in their 7 playoff roadies TY, at Portland, LA and OKC. Moreover, Mavs (like Miami) are also a streaky team, at 43-22-3 ATS TY off a SU victory and, an impressive 44-19-3 ATS TY after holding their opponent to < 100 points in their last game, so if they get rolling and their defense kicks in like it did against the Lakers and Blazers, and in games 3 and 5 against Okie, watch out. Finally, unlike Miami’s last opponent, Chicago, which became a master of the 4Q “disappearing act,” the Mavs have been just as good in the 4Q and OT on the road as Miami at home, outscoring their opponents by an average of 5 points in the 4Q and OT in the five games (of their 7 playoff roadies TY) where they needed a 4Q surge (i.e., where they either trailed or had a lead of less than 5 points after 3Qs).

So while this appears to be a pretty even series, which would tempt us to take the Mavs at the generous +150 series odds and with the 2-3-2 home/road format of the final round not giving the home team as much of a home court advantage as the 2-2-1-1-1 format of the earlier rounds, what gets in the way of that reasoning and strategy is Miami’s apparent edge over Mavs on defense. For example, Le Bron James, always a clutch performer on offense, has really stepped it up on defense lately, even shutting down Derrick Rose when called upon last round to guard him, causing teammate Dwayne Wade to comment, “This is the best basketball on both ends of the floor that Le Bron has played in his career. It’s amazing to see a guy play 45 minutes that hard, that intelligent, and that efficient. He’s an amazing player.” Wade, too, has been a force defensively, with four blocks and two steals in the final 12 minutes in Heat’s pivotal game four victory, after which he stated further, “We’re built to make it tough for guys who come into the paint, and this is the best we’ve been defensively all year.” And as stated by the third member of the Heat’s Big Three, Chris Bosh, “Just the fact that Le Bron and Dwayne are so defensive-minded, we all have to have that same hunger,” And Bosh added that defensive hunger has grown for him “tenfold” this season. Finally, as Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said after his team dispatched Chicago, “It was tough to get open looks in this series, and if you have a strong defense to bank on so you don’t feel as much pressure on the offense, that helps.” And the results on the score board and in the box scores don’t lie, as Boston was held to 89.5 ppg in their four series losses to the Heat and Chicago a weak 83 ppg in their four series losses to Miami.

On the other hand, the Mavs did a great job shutting down the Lakers, holding the defending champs to 88 ppg in that four game series, including 87.5 ppg in the two games at Staples in LA, and relegating Laker "bigs" Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum to doing imitations of the Hanson Brothers in the movie classic “Slap Shot,” taking cheap shots at Mavs players Dirk Nowitzki and JJ Barea in the Mavs' blowout win in game 4. But in the next round, they had a lot more trouble stopping Kevin Durant, Michael Westbrook and James Harden of the Okie Thunder, giving up 100> points in three of their five series games, and often allowing Westbrook and Harden to drive down the lane, for minimally contested layups, often also resulting in free throws. So there is some well-founded concern about how effective that somewhat vulnerable Mavs' interior defense will be against the expected frequent drives to the hoop by Miami players (primarily James and Wade), and how often the good FT shooting Heat will get to the FT line as a result.

So with these two teams pretty evenly matched, and it being a tough call to go against either of them, there is also the question of how much scoring we can expect in this series, and whether playing the total is a better way to go than picking a side, especially if we are having to lay points with the side that we like in any particular game. And the consensus totals line of 187 for game one seems pretty low, given (i) the offensive talent and “star power” on both of these teams, (ii) the fact that these two teams went Over in both of their games against each other TY, with 201 and 194 total points scored in those two games, with the totals line the last time they played each other this season being a full six points higher (at 193) than it is for this game, and (iii) the fact that in their most recent home and road playoff games, these two combined for 8-2 to the Over (with Mavs going 3-2 Over in their last five roadies at Okie, LA and Portland, and Heat going 5-0 Over in their five HGs against Chicago and Boston in the last two rounds). But on the other hand, those last five home Overs by the Heat averaged only 185.5 total points, and the most recent one (game four vs Chicago) was bailed out by the game going to OT, as there were only 170 points scored by the end of regulation. And the Mavs’ five roadies mentioned above averaged only 188.5 total points, with even that # being somewhat skewed by the OT points scored in game four of that series. It’s also fair to say that Miami’s defense is now playing much better than it was in their two games against the Mavs TY, both of which occurred early in the season, in November and December. So perhaps the line makers did, after all, know what they were doing when they set the game one totals line at 187.

So where does all of this leave us if we want to bet this series and/or play these games? First, note that this is the kind of series that can “bury” an inexperienced sports handicapper, who thinks he can figure it all out and beat the spread consistently by just watching the games, analyzing the box scores and point spread and totals results of each game, and listening to the TV network analysts, most of whom may be former NBA icons but who have shown for the most part that they don’t know as much about predicting outcomes of series and individual games as they think they do. With so few games at this late stage of the season and playoffs, coupled with the fact that NBA is the only sport for which we are making and selling picks at this time of year, we are able to analyze each game inside and out from a number of different angles (including the home/road and totals tendencies of the 3 officials assigned to each game) and come up with a full betting attack strategy for each game, which typically consists of at least five picks (per game), since we fully utilize the partial game lines as well as the full game lines in putting together that strategy and making our sides and totals picks. We also often make side/total teaser recommendations in the supporting write-ups for our picks, as utilizing teasers (but not parlays) is an integral part of our handicapping arsenal in these hard to handicap late round games. For example, in game one of this series we have released six picks for a total of 17 units, with a pair of 4 unit PODs (Plays of the Day) on our full game side and totals picks, including two very strong teaser recommendations.

And it’s pretty hard to argue with our success using the above strategy in TY’s NBA playoffs, especially with our Play of the Day picks, on which we are a documented 85% at Top Ten (in the NBA playoffs) -- try 67-12, pulling in a whopping +146 units for our subsribers (and putting $14,500 into the wallets of our $100 per unit NBA POD players in just over six weeks). And this is not just a short run of success, as we have now amassed +779 POD units since Jan 2010 in FB and hoops (see us way on top of the Top Ten POD L/B, a full 567 units ahead of #2). Moreover, our success in the NBA playoffs has become an “annual ritual” – for example, LY at Top Ten we had a 60% hit rate in L3 rounds with our NBA picks, and ended LY's playoffs on a 10-0 POD run for +34 units, and the year before we went 65-41/+46 units on our 106 NBA playoff picks, for a 61% hit rate that was tops on the Top Ten NBA leader board, including 26-10/72% for +30 units in final month of those 2009 playoffs.
