The second most important NE - NY game ever played
by: Nite Owl Sports
With all the Super bowl “hype” and anticipation, fueled not only by the magnitude of the game itself and the high scoring thriller played by these two teams in the final weekend of the regular season, but also by the “feeding frenzy” enjoyed by both the eastern media types and the Madison Avenue advertising execs over the renewal of the whole NY vs. Boston rivalry thing, but this time without the Yankees and Red Sox, it’s hard for anyone to argue that this is not the most important game ever played between these two storied franchises. But how about the second most important game they ever played, at least in terms of media attention, public interest and lasting effect? Anyone looking at a log of past NYG –NE games over the past 20 or so years would have trouble identifying the game, as most of those match-ups were fairly insignificant mid - season inter conference (AFC vs NFC) games, or even worse, just exhibition games.
But this game will be remembered not for the score or what happened on the field that day, but rather for what transpired in the Patriots’ locker room after the game. I don’t remember the exact date or the score, or even who won, and I don’t even want to spend the time trying to find out that insignificant information, because all that is important is that it occurred one late fall Sunday afternoon in Foxboro about 20 years ago, and that the post-game “festivities” in the Pats’ locker room have had much more far reaching ramifications for both the sports world and the sports media than any “normal” regular season game could have, even if the combatants were from Boston and NY.
This game was played at a time when some women were trying to push themselves too far into parts of the sports world that previously had been reserved exclusively for men, such as insisting on being allowed to try out for Division 1 men’s college athletic teams, including football, for god’s sake, and also being admitted into one of the few remaining bastions of male privacy, the teams’ post-game locker rooms. While it seemed somewhat out of place for women to be on the sidelines interviewing players during time outs and coaches on their way to the locker room either at half time or after the game, at least it was tolerable. But then there were the more aggressive ones, like a carrot-topped “lass” named Lisa Olson from the Boston Globe, who actually did the unthinkable and pierced that formerly impenetrable barrier between male sports team members and female reporters, when she barged through the door and into the NE Patriots team locker room to conduct some post-game interviews with Patriots team members, some of whom were in various states of undress while others were without a stitch of clothing, on their way into or out of the showers. One of those virtually naked Patriots players was a big black stud named Zeke Mowat, whose funny sounding name was about to become a household word throughout America. While Ms.Olson was interviewing one of Mowat’s teammates, he approached her from the rear and thrust himself into a unique part of sports history by first mumbling something about a “patriot missile” and then placing in her hand a large oblong object which she thought for an instant was a microphone but was soon horrified to discover was, in fact, Mowat’s very own “patriot missile.”
As rowdy as the resulting locker room scene was that ensued, it was nothing compared to the media circus that followed for weeks afterwards. Women’s liberation groups were outraged and threatened to organize boycotts of future Patriots games, the then current majority owner of the Patriots, a mega millionaire named Victor Kiam, fell all over himself profusely apologizing to Olson and her employer, the Boston Globe (I’ll never forget hearing his raspy voice repeatedly saying “she’s a lovely lady, and my apologies to her”). Hell, even Jesse Jackson grabbed a piece of the limelight, claiming that Mowat was being “hung” (no pun intended) out to dry by the media because he was a black man. But what about Ms.Olson? Well, after a few weeks of intense media scrutiny, including paparazzi literally camped outside her residence and tracking her every move, she decided she could take no more, took an indefinite leave of absence from her job with the Globe, and retreated to another part of the globe (somewhere in Europe, I believe) where she would command less attention and would have at least a modicum of privacy.
So where are these two protagonists now, and what are they doing? I don’t know, and quite frankly I could care less. But what I really do care about is the lasting effect that this incident had on the media and the sports world, by stopping, hopefully forever (and so far, so good) that insane practice of pushy female reporters invading the inner sanctity of the post-game men’s team locker rooms. And while what Zeke Mowat did was both crude and tasteless, we all owe him a debt of gratitude for what his actions accomplished in an era (the 1980s) when people were so concerned about being “politically correct” that no one else to that point had had the “balls’ to stand up and draw a line in the sand to keep female reporters, “color women,” etc. to hell out of men’s post-game locker rooms. So what did Zeke Mowat get from all of this notoriety, other than a peculiar place in sports history and NE Patriots team “lore?” Well, we hear that the “locals” at Pats home games still refer to the jumbo dogs they sell at the concession stands there as “patriot missiles.”
We hope you enjoyed this unexpected walk down memory lane as an escape from the onslaught of pre-Super Bowl articles with a zillion team stats, Super bowl “can’t miss” trends and, God help us, the never-ending list of player props and other weird bets, starting with which team will win the coin toss but fortunately not ending with one on which female reporter will be the first one into the winning team’s locker room after the game. But seriously, there’s a very big game being played Sunday, which nearly all of you are going to watch, and naturally want to win some money on, to heighten your enjoyment of the game. That being the case, we remind you to look at our Big Pick Alert below, which has also been on the Top Ten Cappers web site home page for over a week now, reminding you that Nite Owl Sports has 15 units worth of picks on this game, with strong side and total plays, and an even stronger individual team totals (over/under) pick for the number of points to be scored by one of the teams. For those of you who have not yet given us the chance to show what the Nite Owl can do for you and your bankroll, we would appreciate getting that chance, for just $35. But whatever you do, good luck, enjoy the game, and bet smart..
