I'm sure if your a Titans fan, or a Dolphins fan, you may not want to hear this, but according to NFL numbers since they went to the two wildcard format in 1990, they are officially through. This is the 19th season since the playoff format change in the NFL. That means going into this season 114 AFC teams have made the playoffs. here is the breakdown and results of the 114 teams after 3 weeks of the following season.
There were 26 teams that opened the next season at 3-0, and there were 49 teams that opened the next season at 2-1, making for 78 of the 114 teams show a winning record after making the playoffs the preceeding season, or 68.4% of them. There have been just 9 teams that started 0-3, and 2 of those are this season, with both Tennessee and Miami taking the donut after 3 games. There have been 27 teams that have gotten off to a 1-2 start. That means 36 out of the 114 teams or 31.6% have gotten off to a poor start the year after making a playoff appearance.
What is interesting to note, is the top 3 seeds in the AFC are off to a combined 1-8 start, the worst in history since the 1990 format change. So how have the other 7 teams that started at 0-3 in the AFC fared for the season? They have combined to go to a dismal 40-72 record, or a .357 winning percentage. Not a single one of them made the playoffs, but even worse, not a single one of them even achieved a .500 season, as the best they have done is 7-9, and 2 of the teams finished with 3-13 seasons.
So looking at the prospects of either of these teams rebounding and making a return to the playoffs, is extremely unlikely, in fact, if they do, it will be history, because none have ever managed to do it before.
What else can be gained by looking at these playoff teams from a year ago? Those that have gotten off to a 1-2 start after 3 games, and were a wildcard entry from the year before have played 95-71 to the OVER from game 4 on, that is 57.2%. There is a lot of gold to be found in the team fates from last year's playoff teams after 3 games. I have them ready to pounce on the books with!
