Ohio State/USC Clash of Titans

The No. 5 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes take on the No. 1 ranked USC Trojans in the most anticipated non-conference matchup of the season Saturday, September 13 at 8:00 EST. With both the Buckeyes and the Trojans being heavy favorites to win their respective conferences, the winner of this game could be stamping its ticket to the BCS title game. Odds makers have the home Trojans listed as the 10.5-point favorite. Jimmy Boyd’s Ohio State/USC preview will help you better handicap this matchup. Either Southern Cal or Ohio State has played for the national championship in each of the last four seasons and the winner of this early season matchup could very well be reserving itself a place in this year’s BCS title game.
The Buckeyes enter this contest 2-0 and will be looking to show that last week’s performance against in-state rival Ohio was a fluke and not just a sign that the Buckeyes might be overrated. The Buckeyes were huge favorites against the Bobcats, even with Beanie Wells sidelined by a foot injury, but trailed entering the fourth quarter before squeaking out a 26-14 victory. With Wells listed as a game time decision for this game, we can expect to see the public to start leaning even more toward the Trojans.
If Wells does indeed not go, QB Todd Boeckman’s performance becomes vital to the Buckeyes having success. Boeckman was only 16-of-26 for 110 yards last week. In three games last season against top caliber teams (Illinois, Michigan, and LSU), Boeckman completed just 35 of 62 passes for 414 yards and two touchdowns with six interceptions. The Buckeyes went just 1-2 in those games.
Boeckman has said that this is a statement game for the Buckeyes, and I believe you’ll see his best effort of the season this week. Jim Tressel is no slouch of a coach and he is yet to show much in the first two games so that USC won’t have much to go off of in their film sessions. If you think Tressel and the Buckeyes have enough tricks up their sleeves to pick up the cover, you can bet them at +10.5 at Bookmaker.
The Trojans do have the benefit or coming off a bye week so they should be rested and prepared, but perhaps a little rusty. Bye weeks early in the season can be a little problematic sometimes as they can disrupt the weekly flow. But if any team can get through it, it’s USC.
We all know about the USC defense, but the USC offense is going to have to find ways to score against a strong Ohio State defense as well. Fourth-year junior QB Mark Sanchez will lead the charge. He completed 26 of 35 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-7 week 1 win. The win was enough to put the Trojans into the No. 1 spot in the AP poll. Sanchez is hoping to get USC back to the national title game after John David Booty was unable to do so the past two years.
USC arguably has the best defense in the nation, led by linebackers Rey Maualuga and Brian Cushing. It will be exciting to watch both of these guys as well as Ohio State’s James Laurinitis.
