NFL: The "+3.5 Trap"

I want you to note each time a team is dogged by +3.5. I will give you 3 examples last Sunday as I think in football that is probably one of the toughest spreads to cover and the other odd spread is +5.5. But, let's focus on +3.5. Two weeks ago you saw three teams having that spread as home dogs and they won outright. You remember who they were? Cleveland at home against Baltimore as a dog of 3.5 roughly, then you saw Oakland on the road as a 3.5 dog at Miami as Culpepper faced his old team and finally Buffalo at home against the Jets as roughly a 3.5 Underdog.
Each time you had a team that was an underdog by more than a field goal, and each time the public favored that team by at least 60% or more if not by 65% and close to 70%. Baltimore was favored heavily by the public, the Jets were favored heavily by the public nd the Dolphins were favored by the public. So, here is what the common joe is thinking, "Wow, look at Baltiomre on the road at Cleveland, they are going to kill them an they have to just beat them by a field goal or more so I will take the hook and there is no way I can lose!". Wrong. So, Joe ends up losing the wager and the "hook juice" because it was at 3.5. because he took it down to 2.5. Brutal. The same applies for the Jets on the road at Buffalo, the Jets are going to kill them right! They are just a field goal plus a half a point favorite! Vegas made a mistake! This is too easy! Wrong.
Next time, I want you to look at a game when a team is a dog by 3.5 and the public is heavily on the other team. Vegas sets a line for a reason and ombine that with the fact that the hook is also added makes for a broke average Joe. Just something for you to take a gander at next time you see the lines set up for the NFL.
