NCAA Basketball - Thoughts on Futures

The 2008-09 NCAA Basketball season is on the horizon, as the hoopla surrounding Midnight Madness, slam dunk contests, and then the ultimate preparation begins, for who will be holding the scissors cutting down the nets after the final horn blows. I'd like to share a few of my thoughts, and offer some futures opportunities, that appear to have some solid value.
I think the best approach from what I have seen is to make 3 plays. One a viable, under the radar longshot, another a likely sure shot, and couple those with a speculating hedge. The obvious choice here is North Carolina. Coach Roy Williams had expected to lose several players to the NBA draft, but they all stuck around, which says to me as a unit, they are commited to cut down the nets at the end of it all. They start 5 players that could be playing in the NBA right now, and they probably wouldn't finish in last place. If the commitment indicated by them all returning is followed through, they will win it all. Add in the fact that Williams recruited as if players were leaving, and there is blue-chip quality depth behind the starters.

The next thing I'd do is examine the field bet, and see what is left, and at what price, and if there is the possibility of a sleeper or 2 in the mix, making it worth the price. Missing from listed teams are Notre Dame, Purdue,Memphis,Xavier,USC,,and UNLV, among many others.. The question is do any of those teams have potential to win it all? First guess would be no, because that is how this list always looks, but at elongated odds, and having NC as a solid chip, it is worth playing the field.

The last is a longshot, and in my opinion not so long. Mark Few has arguably his best Zags team ever. Gonzaga has all the parts, a budding superstar in Austin Daye, and a top recruitting class. I have the Zags ranked in the top 4 in the country, and that means a potential final four team, at long odds. The Zags have a tough non-conference schedule, as well as 2 teams in their conference that will keep them competitive in San Diego, and St. Mary's. The odds here don't fit the caliber of this team, and they would fill the bill of a longshot, with favorable valued odds.
