COLORADO (49 - 60) at FLORIDA (56 - 52)
Thursday, 7/31/2008 7:10 PM JORGE DE LA ROSA  vs. ANIBAL SANCHEZ COLORADO (49 - 60) at FLORIDA (56 - 52)

The Marlins begin today a series against the Rockies with a lot of rumors about acquisitions and the most important one is Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox. Until what point will the team be able to forget about all these rumors and continue their great season? Today they will send Anibal Sanchez, which will make his return this season and so, his today's performance is unpredictable. The Marlins are coming from a 2-1 series win against the Mets and they aren't that far away from the top of the NL East division.

On the other side, the Rockies after two losses in a row against the Pirates have now managed to get a win yesterday, continuing their good run which began right after the All Star break ended. Today they will send the Southpaw De La Rosa (5-5, 6.20 ERA), who has been a disaster on the road (1-4, 6.43 ERA, 1.607 WHIP), however he has managed to have two quality games on his last two starts and coincidence or not, he is coming from a road win over the Reds. Actually he has played in 13 innings in his last two starts and he has just allowed 2 runs and 9 hits. Even though this good moment,  De La Rosa hasn't been consistent and today there is a risk of a letdown, as the team he has defeated in the last two games are weak vs LHP and he could have helped from that. Already this season De La Rosa faced the Marlins and won by 12-6, where in 5 IP, he has allowed 3 runs and 6 hits. This game is a 50/50 one. Sanchez is unpredictable right now and De La Rosa, even in a good phase can easily have a letdown today.

ST LOUIS (61 - 49) at ATLANTA (49 - 58)
Thursday, 7/31/2008 7:10 PM JOEL PINEIRO  vs. MIKE HAMPTON

Yesterday I took the Cardinals and the team didn't disappointed me, especially the offense, as they defeated the Braves by 7-2 and they are now looking today their 4th win in a row in Atlanta to complete the sweep. They will send Joel Pineiro (3-4, 4.79 ERA), who has been weak on his last games. On the road, Pineiro hasn't been consistent: 2-3 and 5.43 ERA but it's especially on his last 3 starts, where he has been letting his team down, even though he hasn't really lost any of these games. In these three games he is 8.04 ERA and 2.234 WHIP! Surprisingly he doesn't have any defeat, as the Cardinals have managed to comeback right in the end of these games. He has allowed a combined of 30 hits in these 3 games, 10 hits in each one and if he keeps throwing like that, his luck won't stay with him forever.

The Braves will send the Southpaw Mike Hampton, who will make his second start for Atlanta. In his first game, Hampton just played for 4 innings, where he has allowed 9 runs and ruined the chances of the team in that game. I like the spot of the Cardinals in here. The team is fighting for the playoffs, unlike Atlanta which seems to have lost some motivation in the last days. However a sweep of 4 games isn't very usual and the Cardinals have never managed to do it in Atlanta before. The team isn't very strong vs LHP, as they are just 19-19 and being a road favorite, it's necessary to think twice before backing a team in this game.

PHILADELPHIA (57 - 49) at WASHINGTON (38 - 68)
Thursday, 7/31/2008 7:10 PM KYLE KENDRICK  vs. JOHN LANNAN

Washington just can't win and they are now in a 9 games losing streak, while the Phillies are taking the chance of facing the worst team in the league. Today Philadelphia will send Kyle Kendrick (8-5, 4.70 ERA) and even though he has a great record on the road (5-2, 5.02 ERA), he comes from two losses in a row. After a terrible game in Florida, where he has allowed 7 runs in less than 5 innings, Kendrick bounce back against Atlanta, but not enough to win. The team is 1-3 on his last 4 outings.

On the other side, the Nationals will send John Lannan (6-10, 3.33 ERA), who has been really solid lately. Lannan doesn't have more wins for the motive we all know: this team can't win. Even though all of this, Lannan is 2-1, 1.89 ERA and 1.21 WHIP on his last three outings, with good home wins against Atlanta and on the road against Atlanta. His consistence has been really good in July with just 3-1-0-3 runs and 6-7-2-5 hits allowed. Today would be a good game for the Nationals to win, as Lannan is in a good moment, however trying to guess when a team stops a losing streak can be really hard to do and only with a fairly good price I would be willing to take a chance to guess it.

LA ANGELS (67 - 40) at NY YANKEES (59 - 48)
Thursday, 7/31/2008 7:05 PM JON GARLAND  vs. ANDY PETTITTE

They did it again! That can be the sentence which better fits the Angels lately, as the best team of the league has now won 13 of their last 15 games and they have completed yesterday a double sweep against the current champions Red Sox, with their ace pitcher Josh Beckett on the field. Today they start another really interesting series in New York against the Yankees and they will send Jon Garland (9-6, 4.30 ERA). He has been really consistent on the road lately with 6-2 and 4.58 ERA, however in the last games, his form has decreased a little bit and his numbers confirm that, as he is 1-1, 8.59 ERA and 2.045 WHIP on his last 3 starts. Besides all of this, against the Red Sox in the series at LA, he managed to get a good win.

The Yankees will send Andy Pettitte (12-7, 3.76 ERA), who has been doing a good season, even though he isn't as good at home as he is on the road. Pettitte at home is 5-4 and 4.00 ERA, however his last home performance was amazing, just like he has been doing lately, as he is 2-1, 2.70 ERA and 1.05 WHIP on his last 3 outings. Also the team is 8-2 on his last 10 starts. The question in here will be to find where is the value. Pettitte seems to be in better form, but is it worth it to take the Yankees at -156? Ok, we all expect a letdown from the Angels sooner or later, but let's not forget the team is 19-7 vs LHP and 9-3 where these matches are on the road. The Angels +148 in these conditions may actually be the best pick in here.

Yesterday the D-Backs and the Cardinals opened the series in an authentic high scoring affair game, with the home team winning by 8-6, in a game where he had 4 HR and 24 hits.
