COLORADO (48 - 60) at PITTSBURGH (50 - 57)

Wednesday, 7/30/2008 7:05 PM AARON COOK (R) vs. ZACH DUKE (L)

Colorado has managed for the second time in a row to lose against the Pirates after leading the game. Yesterday they were up by 4 runs and then the Pirates managed to turn around the game and today they come with the ambition to complete the sweep and take revenge from the Rockies. Colorado will send Aaron Cook (13-6, 3.46 ERA) to the pitch today, who can help them to win today, as he has been on-fire even after the All-Star break. He has been really solid on the road with 7-3 and 3.48 ERA and after the All-Star break, he has won his two starts: on the road against the Reds and at home against these Pirates.

On the other side, the Pirates will send Zack Duke (4-8, 5.04 ERA), who has been doing a terrible season. Duke is yet to win in July and the team has lost all matches this month where he was the SP (0-5). On his last three starts, he is 0-3 with 10.06 ERA and 1.824 WHIP! Curiously Duke faced Cook in a game in Colorado, where the Rockies won by 11-3. There is clearly a mismatch on the form of the two pitchers, however the Pirates have the momentum of this series, as they look to get revenge from the sweep they suffered in Colorado and I don't know if there is any value in taking a road favorite -145 in these conditions.

NY METS (58 - 49) at FLORIDA (56 - 51)

Wednesday, 7/30/2008 7:10 PM MIKE PELFREY (R) vs. JOSH JOHNSON (R)

The Mets defeated Florida yesterday by 4-1, putting the series tied at 1-1. This win came in a good time, as Philadelphia has also won, so the Mets didn't lose any terrain in the fight for the division lead. Today they will send Mike Pelfrey (9-6, 3.67 ERA), who has been dominating in the last games, showing a great level. Pelfrey on the road hasn't been as good as in home games, however he has a positive record: 5.68 ERA and 7-2. But lately Pelfrey has been on-fire. This month he has just allowed 1-5-0-0-1 runs in his matches and 7-6-6-3-6 in terms of hits. Actually the team has won the last 9 matches Pelfrey has started for them!

On the other side, the Marlins will send Josh Johnson (0-0, 3.71 ERA), who is looking for his first win this season! Johnson in the 3 starts he has already done hasn't been able to get a win, but his team won all three matches. And it was against the Cubs, the Phillies and the Dodgers, in games where they were dogs by +155, +145 and +130! An impressive record! Besides that Johnson has faced the Mets before at home and in 12 IP, he has just allowed a single run. The Mets may have a slight edge over this match, as Pelfrey is on-fire lately, however I respect what Johnson has been doing and I wouldn't take a -120 favorite, when the dog has a good chance to win today.

CINCINNATI (50 - 58) at HOUSTON (50 - 56)

Wednesday, 7/30/2008 8:05 PM EDINSON VOLQUEZ (R) vs. WANDY RODRIGUEZ (L)

Houston will be looking today for a sweep against the Reds, after having won the previous two games of the series. The team is coming from a good sequence of 4-1 L5, while the Reds have now lost their last five games. The Astros will send today to the pitch Wandy Rodriguez (6-3, 3.18 ERA) who is playing like an ace pitcher, as in his last three starts, he is 3-0 and 3.00 ERA. Wandy at home has been also amazing with 3-2, 2.54 ERA and 1.107 WHIP and today he can give a great chance for another win for the Astros.

On the other side, the Reds will send Volquez, who is also having a nice season with 12-4 and 2.77 ERA. He has also been consistent on the road (6-2, 2.24 ERA) and he is 3-1 on his last four roads games. However Volquez comes from two disappointing home games, where he was the favorite and his team lost both games. For this game Houston is the favorite, however Rodriguez comes from two games where he was the clear dog by +114 and +147. I don't know if there isn't a possibility of a letdown tonight, especially when Volquez is also a good pitcher and he has done very well on the road this season.

LA ANGELS (66 - 40) at BOSTON (61 - 47)

Wednesday, 7/30/2008 7:05 PM JOE SAUNDERS (L) vs. JOSH BECKETT (R)

John Lackey was amazing last night and he entered to the last inning without suffering a single run for the batters of Boston. With that, the Angels won by 6-2 and they continued their surprising domination over the Red Sox. Today Boston will try to break this sequence by sending their ace pitcher Josh Beckett (9-7, 3.83 ERA). He continues with some excellent performances, however he isn't having enough run support to make him win, as against the Yankees he has only allowed on rune and he still lost and against these same Angels, he has allowed 4 runs in the 7th inning and lost against Saunders.

The Angels will send today Saunders (13-5, 3.10 ERA) and he has been amazing on the road with 7-3 and 2.41 ERA . He was one of the main reasons why the Angels swept Boston last week. It seemed impossible for the Angels to repeat such performance in Boston, but they are close from getting another sweep. Today Mark Teixeira will debut and even though I think Boston has everything to win today, -170 is too low for a team which is 0-7 L7 against the Angels.

CHI WHITE SOX (59 - 46) at MINNESOTA (59 - 47)

Wednesday, 7/30/2008 8:10 PM GAVIN FLOYD (R) vs. LIVAN HERNANDEZ (R)

Minnesota can finally reach the first place of their division for the first time in two months, if they defeat today the White Sox. The team is 2-0 in this series against their rivals and today they can finally get back the place they have been fighting for. For that, the Twins will send Livan Hernandez (10-7, 5.31 ERA), who has been very good at home with 8-1 and 3.91 ERA. However, Hernandez has been inconsistent lately and in his last three starts, he is just 1-2 and 6.05 ERA with defeats against Boston and Cleveland. Actually he has been alternating wins with losses in his last 6 starts.

On the other side, the White Sox will send Gavin Floys (10-6, 3.57 ERA) and who hasn't been consistent lately. On his last 3 outings, he is 0-2,  6.13 ERA and 2.113 WHIP and he isn't 0-3 because the bullpen of the Tigers offered the game to the White Sox. He has already played three times against the Twins this season and he showed two different faces. One at home where he won both games and he has just allowed 3 runs and the other on the road, where he lost by 1-3. With two pitchers so inconsistent it's hard for me to decide who's going to win. Honestly, any team can win today and there are much better value on some other games of the day.
