Late Season NFL Handicapping - and more

by: Kendall Holiday

Wow, what a weekend.  Attending mothers 60th birthdays, and heading to the airport to pick up out of towners in for the weekend.  Must be bowl season.  Now, back to what matters…

If you pay close attention to the NFL, something is becoming evident.  What is it?  You don’t know?  Teams that are able to run the football are starting to dominate which they tend to do this time of year.  Looking at some of this weekend’s results, teams like Jacksonville, San Diego, Tampa Bay, New England, Tennessee, and Washington unleashed their physical offenses and running games to get wins.  Defenses are starting to wear down a bit from the grind on the season which will provide ample advantage to teams that can pound the rock, down the stretch.  The Monday night game had yet to be played at print, but we expect Minny and company to run roughshod over the beaten up Bears.

We really like the look of Jacksonville heading into the NFL playoffs.  They are as physical as any team in the league and have a potent pair of backs in Taylor and Jones Drew.  Losing Stroud hurts them, but no one wants to play them in the AFC and the same can be said for a Chargers team that has won 8 of 10 games.

Something keeps telling us that New England will go undefeated in the regular season and not make the Super Bowl.  The AFC is simply loaded and it looks like a toss up to us.  Several of the warm weather teams have offenses that are equipped to go into cold weather environments and win.  See Jacksonville yesterday, and San Diego is more than capable as well.

Brett Favre has truly been a treat to watch, but we hope he retires after the season and goes out on top so to speak.

This looks like a very good draft class to date.  We’ll have our first mock draft up after the regular season has come to an end.

If you follow college football recruiting at all, you have to take notice of Colorado’s recruiting class, which is shaping up to be their best haul since 1996.  Hawkins has been a recruiting machine, and look for Colorado to really be back in the 2009 season.  This class looks to have the best group of linebackers in the country and could feature Darrell Scott, who is the #1 RB in the country according to Rivals.

The NBA season is really getting into the meat of the schedule and the Celtics look very good to date, posting a ridiculous 20-2 record.  Danny Ainge has to be given credit for the rapid rise of the Celts.  The big three has been a thing of beauty, but we still maintain that trouble will loom should one player get hurt.

The NBA still goes through San Antonio, who seems to just chug along at their own pace.  They defend better than any team in the league and can score the basketball in so many ways.  This is why they barely miss a beat when playing without Duncan or Parker.  Right now, we do not see any team beating them in a seven game series, once again this season.  This is a flat dynasty, and will continue to be just that as long as they can keep their quality role players in tact.  Not one team in the league can compete with Barry, Finley, Manu, Fabricio, etc.

Michigan hit the jackpot with their coaching search, and showed that patience pays off in these coaching searches.  Rodriguez was able to attract a great deal of speed and talent to Morgantown, so he certainly will be able to recruit to Ann Arbor.  It will be interesting to see if he scraps the Wolverine offense and instills his run first version of the spread attack.  That will make the Big Ten a much more interesting conference in football.

After reading much of the Mitchell Report, and after looking at old baseball cards all weekend long, cleaning out the closet, it is amazing that it took this long.  There is no question that the majority of the league has used performance enhancing something over the past five to ten years.  Bud Selig had no choice but to turn his back on this one folks.  The steroid fueled McGwire / Sosa home run off brought fans back to baseball after the strike shortened season, but we would guarantee that the higher ups knew something was going on.  We have little doubt that the Rocket used roids at some point during his career and we think he should come out and address it.  As we have seen, silence is deadly when it comes to this stuff, but admission seems to set these players free in the public’s eye.

We were 2-1 on the week last week in the NFL, and have a four unit play in the first College Bowl Game this week.  We will release every game this Bowl Season, and have a strong track record over the next month.  Have a safe and profitable Holiday Season!
