It’s All in the Units

Throughout my 30+ years as a sports handicapper, many people have asked what is my secret for achieving sports handicapping success, other than the obvious of picking more winners than losers. In previous articles published in the Top Ten Cappers newsletter and web site, I stressed the importance of finding “line value,” whether it’s in the context of point spreads or money lines, and explained some of the ways I go about doing that, such as in my series of articles published last September about finding money line value in MLB match-ups, followed by one in October about looking for point spread value with “under the radar” college football teams, the latter of which also applies to college basketball teams. But there is another important aspect of achieving sports handicapping success, that being astute management of units risked to units won, and in the case of most newsletter readers, it’s management of the Big Three, which are not just the two mentioned above (units risked to units won), but also figuring in how much one is spending to buy their picks from a professional sports handicapper through an honest and reputable sports handicapping service such as Top Ten Cappers, and how many quality picks one is getting for such expenditure.
While I realize that “playing the board” with a large ratio of picks to total games is a losing proposition in the long run due to the “juice” paid on typical point spread bets, and even worse if it includes some high-priced money line plays, it is also a pretty simple concept that if you buy a handicapper’s picks for a given day and he goes 5-2 on 7 picks, you will make more money on those picks than if he released only four and went 3-1 (a higher winning % than 5-2) on those four picks. That’s why we don’t artificially limit our # of picks to a certain number at Nite Owl Sports, especially on “large card” days like Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday during the height of the winter sports season. The result is that when you buy one of our pick packages, such as our one day college hoops pass for just $35 or our all sports pass for just $50, you get plenty of “bang for your buck.” For example, today we have isolated 7 college hoops games as likely picks tonite for Nite Owl Sports, and already have two 5 unit picks and a 4 unit pick posted for three of those games.
While all of this makes perfect sense, and most of you probably know this, even if you don’t closely practice units and cost management, it’s easier to understand with some examples including actual dollar amounts, wagers and units, so here goes. In the last four days, Nite Owl Sports has gone 14-7 on its picks for a whopping + 25.5 units. I invite you to verify that by going to the Top Ten home page, clicking on Handicappers icon and then on Nite Owl Sports, and then scrolling to the bottom of Nite Owl’s site page where it lists “Nite Owl Sports past picks,” where you can see for yourself our last 21 picks and results, including units won. In looking at these picks, you will see some picks on money line dogs which returned more units than they risked, particularly our 4/1money line pick on NY Giants to win the Super Bowl. Another strategy that we often use to increase our net units (which converts into plus dollars) is to split our plays on small underdogs that we think have a good chance to win the game outright, such as our two picks Monday this week on Middle Tenn State (3 units ATS at + 3.5 points, and two units at +140 on money line) over Ark Little Rock in college hoops, which “netted” us +5.6 units when Middle Tenn State won the game outright. On that Monday night, our won-loss record was just 4-3-1, but thanks to our “double play” split bet on Middle Tenn State, we were up 5.5 units for the night.
Another secret to having a large number of plus units is to avoid large money line picks or stupid heavy juice picks like betting a dog in an NHL game but instead of taking that dog for “plus odds” on the money line, turning it into a potentially money burning pick by laying big juice to “buy” +1.5 goals, something we never do at Nite Owl, as I believe it to be the biggest “rip off” in all of sports betting. For example, a +125 NHL dog on the money line becomes a heavy money line “favorite” (at - 170 -180) on the +1.5 goal puck line, and can easily lose that heavy juice bet at the end of a tight game, if the “dog” is losing by just one goal in the last minute, pulls the goalie and the other team scores an easy empty net goal – it happens all the time in the NHL.
So how does all this units management, combined with buying a good “bang for your buck” picks package from cappers like Nite Owl Sports, convert into plus dollars for the customer? Let’s say the customer bets $20 per unit, and bought our one day all sports pass for each of the last four days, at $50 per day. Below is the dollar calculation.
