GAME 1 SUPERBOWL WINNERS AND LOSERS

There has been a lot written about fading last year's Superbowl winner, afterall, the effects of winning the ring, the big prize is the achievement, and dream of every player that puts on an NFL uniform, can be deflating entering the next season. How about the Superbowl loser? One would think this team would come out hungry as ever, after their near miss. WRONG ON BOTH COUNTS!
The Superbowl winner at one time was considered almost automatic fade material, but that has changed, and changed big. Does anyone remember how long it has been since St. Louis won the Superbowl? It was all the way back to the turn of the decade in the 1999-00 season. They were the last Superbowl winner to lose to the pointspread in their opening week of the following season. The last 8 Superbowl Champions have been 7-0-1 ATS in week 1.
The Superbowl loser, has met an entirely different fate, as one would think of the two teams, this would be the one with all the motivation, off a near miss, but if you look at their season opener the following year, it would not be a very convincing arguement to that cause. Does anyone remember the last time the Atlanta Falcons were in the Superbowl? It goes all the way back to the 1998-99 season. They were the last Superbwl loser to win against the pointspread in their opener the following year! That leaves the Superbowl loser at 0-9 ATS the past 9 years in game 1 of the following season!
I am not an advocate of parlays by any stretch of the imagination, never play them, but if you bet against the Superbowl loser in game 1 of the following year, and parlayed it with the under, you would have won 7 consecutive years! The fact is, the under has been a winner in the Superbowl losers opening game of the following year to a mark of 12-3 the last 15 years, and in each of the last 4 years, none of the games scored more than 27 points!
The Superbowl loser is now on the fade list. Last year the New England Patriots finished with a 9-7 ATS record, as the previous year's Superbowl loser, and it marked just the second time the Superbowl loser had a winning record for the season ATS in the last 12 years! The Superbowl winner on the otherhand, has had a .500 record or better in their following season in each of the last 5 years, and have compiled a 26-13-1 ATS mark in the second half of those 5 seasons, and 48-30-2 ATS overall, covering 61.5% of all their games. The Superbowl losers, in the first half of their next season have posted a dismal 36-57-3 mark ATS over the past 12 seasons, or 38.7% ATS. They atr 76-111-5 ATS in all games over the past 12 years, or covering just 40.6%.
Finally, just 1 out of the last 8 Superbowl losers, has even made the playoffs the following year, and those 8 teams have a combined regular season record of 58-70! Just 4 Superbowl winners in the last 26 years have finished the next season with an under .500 record, while 4 of the Superbowl losers have finished with a losing record the next season in just the last 6 years alone!
So when you consider fading the Superbowl winner, you may want to think again, and when thinking the Superbowl loser will be hungry, you may want to rethink that as well. You also must consider that playing blindly, can drain your account, but certainly using this with other solid handicapping methods can confirm, or deny what choices you make in the upcoming NFL season.
