DID YOU EVER WONDER ABOUT A GOOD OR BAD PRESEASON?

Many have coined the NFL Preseason, as a bunch of meaningless games, that generate little interest, and is just a stage for borderline players to make a case to secure an NFL roster spot. While that may be the truth, the overall performance of teams, may very well merit some consideration of these results, because there are some longterm trends, that could lead to anxieties for some teams that did landed a goose-egg in the winning column, nad some hopeful inspiration, for those that ran the table, in these otherwise, meaningless games. I decided to take a look at what history says about teams that finish without a loss in the exhibition season. Does it carry forward into the regular season, or is it just as depicted, meaningless games, that have no indication of what a team will do when they put the ball on the tee for the first time, where the real games begin. This preseason there was only one such team to run the table, and that was the Detroit Lions, that ran off 4 straight, and let's take a look at the teams that also finished the exhibition season with an unblemished mark. Since 1996, there have been 14 teams that have made this list. These 14 teams finsihed with a combined 135-103 record during the regular season, meaning they averaged winning 9.6 games a year, and 9 of 15 made the playoffs, or 60%. There have been 2 Superbowl winners from this select group. Of the 9 teams that made the playoffs, 7 of those won at least 1 playoff game. Is this the year the Lions make a run at the playoffs, and appear in a Superbowl for the first time ever? There were also 2 teams this year that failed to record a win in the preseason, one was Cleveland, and the other was New England. New England becomes quite the spectacle when we look at the past history, one that may make their fans a bit edgy. There have been 11 teams over the last 12 years that failed to record a win in the preseason, and they finsihed the regular season with a combined 81-95 record. What may be potentially scary to New England fans is only 1 of these 11 teams even made the playoffs, and the one that made the playoffs failed to record a playoff win. That means in 12 years of so-called meaningless games, not a single team that laid the goose-egg in the preseason won a playoff game. Is this the year where New England, everyone's favorite to make yet another Superbowl appearance suddenly gets old, and fails to even make the playoffs? Or if they do, are they going to get bounced in game one? On paper, this seems like an absolute impossibility, but as they say, the games aren't played on paper!
