Did Minnesota Make the Right Choice?
by: Evan Altemus
The biggest sports radio topic this morning was the Minnesota Timberwolves drafting three point guards in the 1st round. Minnesota's general manager, David Kahn, got dragged through the mud by various sports media outlets, specifically for taking Spain's Ricky Rubio and Syracuse's Johnny Flynn with back-to-back picks, as they traded away Ty Lawson, the 18th pick, to Denver. However, does Kahn and Minnesota have a plan that the media and other NBA teams don't know about?
The Timberwolves have already reported that several teams have contacted them about Rubio, as reports are that he and his father are very upset about Flynn being drafted with the 6th pick. There are also rumors that Rubio may not even bother to get out of his pro contract with his Spanish team. However, did Minnesota predict that this storm would happen? Kahn has said that he is listening to all offers for either Flynn or Rubio, and the Timberwolves appear to be in a great position to get strong offers for either point guard. Minnesota, appearing in a position of weakness, is actually in a position of strength.
However, the Timberwolves made a big mistake in firing head coach Kevin McHale. He got this young team to play much better last year, even though the results weren't as apparent in wins and losses. They had an outstanding against the spread record once McHale took over, as he got this young line-up to dramatically improve their play. This team also suffered through the loss of their best player, Al Jefferson, to a season ending injury after their dramatically improved play. McHale's firing is what should make people question if the management knows what they're doing. Overall Minnesota has a chance to have success over the next few years if they handle their current situation with Rubio and Flynn correctly, as well as hire a solid head coach to make people forget about McHale. Also, they need to bring in an additional veteran presence to keep the younger players in control. A Derek Fisher type player is exactly what the team needs to balance the youth with experience if the Timberwolves expect to have any type of success over the next two seasons.
