Each day these articles will prepare readers for the start of both the NFL and college football seasons. It is important to learn from mistakes in previous years and develop a game plan for success heading into this year. Let’s go over some strategies and/or information that will lead to a profitable football season.
This article is going to focus on how to handicap the NFL preseason. The most important thing to realize about these exhibition games is that it is virtually impossible to accurately handicap a majority of them. Most of these games from a point spread perspective are decided in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and with third and fourth string players. Also, most coaches aren’t very predictable with what they are going to do late in the game, as some go for the win while others just want the game to end. The key to success with these preseason games is to be very selective and have specific reasons for making a selection.
There are only a few reasons to make a selection in an NFL preseason game. They include factors involving coaches decisions, depth charts, value, and effort. However, the previously listed factors have to be a very strong factor in the game, therefore there are only a few games worth wagering on each week in this exhibition games. For example, it is not enough to make a selection just based on one team having a better overall quarterback rotation. A good selection would involve a team whose starting quarterback hasn’t played well, and the coach expressed a strong desire in playing him longer until he shows improvement. Typically, motivated starters will have tremendous success against back-up players in the preseason. Savvy bettors look at coaches comments to find quality information on motivation, playing time for starters and back-ups, as well as coaches thoughts on what his team will focus on. Remember, the key to successful picks in the NFL preseason is to be as selective as possible.
