2008 NFL Betting Traps

by: Jimmy Boyd

Before you do any NFL betting in the 2008 regular season, Jimmy Boyd wants to bring you up to speed on a couple NFL betting traps you are going to want to avoid.

The Pittsburgh Steelers won the AFC North in 2007 and have easily been the most dominant team in this division for quite some time.  Just how dominant you ask?  Last year’s division title marked Pittsburgh’s 18th since the 1970 NFL merger.  BetUS has the Steelers listed as the +110 favorite to win the AFC North as a result, but before blindly laying down on this team, you need to check their schedule.  The Steelers will be playing the most difficult schedule in the NFL in 2008.  Their opponents had a .598 winning percentage last season.  The Steelers also lost three of their last 4 regular season games in 2007, barely edging out the Cleveland Browns.  Those losses have been chalked up to poor offensive line play and nothing was done to replace the loss of Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca.  Meanwhile, the Browns have made many more effective moves to bolster their squad, like signing free agent acquisitions Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams.  The Steelers must play tough road games at Minnesota, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Jacksonville, New England, and Tennessee.  The Giants, Colts, Chargers, and Cowboys will be no picnic at home.  This just goes to show you how important it is to check out a team’s schedule before you go making them your pick to win their division.  After checking the odds, it’s obvious that Pittsburgh is being overvalued.

Another team that both the public and the oddsmakers have started to fall in love with is the Arizona Cardinals.  They are the runner-up to win the NFC West at +250 at BetUS after the Seahawks, and the oddsmakers have surprisingly made the St. Louis Rams and the San Francisco 49ers long shots behind them.  BetUS Sportsbook also favors the Cards to finish second in the West at +185 odds.  Arizona did finish second in the league last season at 8-8, but they were fortunate enough to play in a league that was stricken with injuries.  The Rams were among the most injury plagued teams in the league with Pro Bowlers Marc Bulger and Stephen Jackson battling through them all season.  The offensive line was especially affected.  The 49ers also caught a heavy dose of the injury bug.  With these teams returning to health for the 2008 season, it’s going to be very difficult for the Cards to be as successful.  Also, the Cards were just 2-6 on the road this season and they have shown no signs of improving away from the dessert.  Kurt Warner and Edgerrin James also posted unlikely years to get the Cards to the .500 mark.  This team has only sniffed the postseason once in its 20-year history in Arizona and it appears the oddsmakers are anointing them a little too quickly at having a chance in 2008.  We’ll look to fade them again this season.
