2008 Georgia Bulldogs College Football Predictions

All the pieces of the puzzle are in place for the Georgia Bulldogs to make a run at the national championship. The offense is balanced and explosive and the defense is fast and physical. Georgia also has the benefit of depth at almost every position. The only thing that may hold this talented squad back is its tough schedule, having to face the likes of Arizona State, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Florida, Auburn, and Georgia Tech. Find out how Jimmy Boyd thinks Georgia will navigate through those games, and ultimately, how he thinks the Dawgs will come out in SEC play in his 2008 Georgia Bulldogs predictions and season preview.
Offense
Consider the following weighing strongly in Georgia's favor: quarterback Matt Stafford's 128.9 passer rating trailed only Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow's among returning SEC signal callers, last season's completely rebuilt line now has a year of experience under its belt, the Dawgs add talented freshman receivers Tavarres King, A.J. Green, and Israel Troupe while only losing Sean Bailey, and the Dawgs averaged nearly 38 points per game over their last six games. I'd say this unit is going to be one tough cookie in 2008. Oh yeah, running back Knowshon Moreno had a coming out party with 1,332 yards and 14 touchdowns. His big play ability will only help Stafford and the passing attack. Georgia is very good at running the football to set up the pass and that's what you'll see plenty of this season. I expect the aforementioned freshman wideouts and Mohamed Massaquoi to really have big years.
Defense
The Dawgs return nine starters from a unit which ranked 14th nationally in yards allowed last season. Since Mark Richt took over the Georgia sideline, the Dawgs have always put one of the best defensive lines in the nation on the field. Tackles Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins will be plugging up the interior gaps while defensive ends Roderick Battle and Jeremy Lomax will be pressuring opposing QBs. Senior middle linebacker Dannell Ellerbe's intensity and consistent play is the glue. Weakside linebacker Rennie Curran is already among the best weak side backers in a strong conference as a sophomore. Asher Allen and Prince Miller are one of the best cornerback duos in the country with no exaggeration. Kelin Johnson, who led the team with four picks last season at free safety, is gone, but athletic sophomore Reshad Jones appears to be an upgrade.
Special Teams
True Freshman place kicker Blair Walsh is a big time high school prospect with 60-yard range. If he can fill the big shoes left by Brandon Contu, he will be the X-factor this season.
Prediction - 1st in SEC East
Since Mark Richt took over the Georgia program, the Bulldogs are an impressive 72-18, and he'll put his most complete team on the field this season. I mentioned earlier that Georgia's schedule will be tough because of all the good teams in the SEC East, but I think Georgia will be able to win those tough games because of their depth and overall talent. Not only will this team win the SEC, we'll likely be seeing them in the national championship game.
