2007 Fantasy Football Sleepers: Receivers

Sure, we all hear about fantasy football sleepers and everyone seems to have a sleeper these days. However, I love fantasy sports and winning the regular season in football, as it can be linked to fantasy sports, is as Bear Bryant used to say, is done in the off-season. Hence, a winning season is not had in August, but rather the summer before with the recruiting efforts as if you don't have a good crop - in this case, he equates crop to his new recruiting class - you've got nothing.
With that in mind, we all know the studs of the fantasy world including Manning, Tomlinson and Tory Holt. But, it is the fantasy sleepers that make or break a team. My personal belief is that running backs are the absolute gem of the draft more than receivers and quarterbacks. Why? Because, there are only a few dominant running backs in my opinion, and they will go in a hurry. So, you better draft them early and often in that position. So, as per me, I will be drafting a running back in four of the first five rounds.
Thus, running backs are the absolute paramount in drafting early on unless you get an elite player in another position quickly such as Manning. However, what makes or breaks a team in the fantasy draft are the sleepers and this is why I draft my running backs first, then quarterbacks and then finally wide receivers as I feel that is the position with the greatest depth and consequently the greatest value. Thus, these receivers can be drafted from the sixth round onwards and they can still put up quality numbers as compared to a top five-round receiver. Thus, while running backs are slim pickings after the first few rounds and have plenty of attention on them, it is at the receiver position where you can get great value and much, much later in the draft.
But, to use this strategy, you must have plenty of sleepers in wide receivers and a steady crop to keep drafting from. Thus, here are my 10 wide receivers that can potentially put up elite numbers, such as the receivers that are likely to go in the first five rounds that you can pick up in later rounds, allowing yourself to get potent running backs that are sparse when compared to the ton of deep talent available in wide receivers. There are more, but here are the 10 receivers that you should keep an eye on for huge upside that can put up competent numbers to the elite receivers that will go earlier.
Alphabetical order:
Drew Bennett - With a great passing offense in St. Louis and with Isaac Bruce growing older, Bennett should be seeing plenty of looks from Bulger as a complement to Tory Holt.
Braylon Edwards - In my opinion, Cleveland's go-to guy this year. Edwards snagged 60+ catches and nearly 900 yards last year, and barring any injury, Edwards should eclipse 1000 yards this year along with 70 to 80 catches no matter which quarterback takes the helm, Edwards will be used often and effectively.
Lee Evans - Lot of talk about this Bills offense and how explosive it can be. If that's the case, then this man should be seeing a lot of the ball along with M. Lynch as well.
Ted Ginn Jr. - Welcome to the NFL and Trent Green will realize that if he is to succeed, he will have to find this young man and he could be very useful with special teams yardage as well. The Dolphins are likely to take a shot down field with him consistently each game as he will be along side Chris Chambers.
Santonio Holmes - Sure, there is Hines Ward, but this young man is ready for a breakout season with Big Ben also looking for a good bounce-back year.
Joe Horn - Petrino is still an offensive guru and as long as Harrington has an arm, he can find Joe Horn who will be an integral part of this offense without a doubt and is the primary receiver. Good players on bad teams allow for plenty of fantasy action.
Vincent Jackson - Sure, I know there is Eric Parker, but this kid is HUGE and will allow for Rivers to drill it to him in the Red Zone and he's a quality wideout for San Diego's high-powered offense.
Andre Johnson - Remember this guy, similar to Joe Horn, good player on a bad team although Houston will have a much better offense this year with a true passer such as Schaub, he should see plenty of balls thrown his way. This guy had 103 receptions and 1100+ yards last year alone, think what he will do this year.
Dwayne Jarrett - Enter Jarrett, Exit K. Johnson. Jarrett will quickly move up in the mind of Delhomme as this organization needs an heir apparent to Steve Smith, although there can only be one Steve smith, but with Smith getting so much attention Jarrett could see a lot of balls his way.
Eric Moulds - Another good player on a Titans team that doesn't get much attention. Vince Young only has a few options and Moulds is one of them. Young will rely on him for his experience and if this team is to have any success this year, he HAS to be in the mix of things.
